There's no logical explanation other than they wanted to keep it "Pat and Ron" after Santo died, because reasons

Those were dark days that I didn't listen to the radio much because I had no reason to follow games live as box scores would suffice and following the minors was more important. I forgot they had him Moreland for a while

Because Coomer is a pretty solid radio color guy. It's inexplicable that they let him do PBP even if only one inning, but that colors most people's opinion of him.

No he's pretty bad at color too. Not that his info is bad, I just hate the sound and cadence of his voice

the play by play is really bad, but it has nothing to do with my distaste for his bumbling goofy country bumpkin sounding ass. he's not good at speaking. he isn't funny or anything (as far as a redeeming quality) and i really have no idea what the basis is for saying he's solid..his analysis is generally as meatbally and conventional old school wisdom as anyone (not that most of his peers in his profession are generally much better - so maybe that's where you're coming from?)

i don't like a single thing about him. the pbp is just icing on the cake.

The distaste for his voice is largely a person by person opinion, but the other important thing to remember is that the bar isn't high here. Color guys who are truly good aren't going to be doing radio, so we shouldn't be hoping for much more than a good rapport with their partner(Ron has this, Moreland painfully did not), and an ability to add descriptions to plays to round out the listening experience(Ron is okay at this). There are no radio versions of JD.

i mean, i agree as far as the rapport with pat. that's about the only thing i find OK about him.

i mean, i'm sure DeRo would say all kinds of meatbally stuff but that's ok because he's such a cool guy, that dero. i'd go rock climbing with him.

Couldn't agree more; it's lowest common denominator pandering that ultimately isn't that far off from Hawk. I certainly don't expect radio color guys to be amazing, but I think a big part of why guys like Moreland and Coomer seem so bad is the Cubs have had such great color guys in the TV booth between Bob and JD.

Coomer only seems remotely solid to me when Pat is basically propping him up by spoon feeding him things to say. Agree the rapport is good between the two, but the value that brings is canceled out almost entirely by the fact that Coomer adds a 'y' to the end of everyone's names.

I love Pat and Ron because Pat is a legend and while Ron is average, they have a great rapport. They play off each other so well, it makes the games easy to listen to

It's only one game but Heyward looked much better at the plate last night. His body was better aligned at contact and his top hand was much looser before the pitch.

I was definitely watching that top hand. I wonder if he saw that Derosa segment.

I don't think I could possibly make such an analysis just watching a game.
