Will be fascinated to watch Steele start. If he (or Thompson for that matter, though it feels like there's more upside w Steele) look like a good Major League starter, the path to contention next year becomes a lot easier for me to envision.

Yeah, I think no matter what we need two starters, including a legit #2/#3 guy. But if Steele or Thompson looks good here that second SP can be a backend type. If Steele AND Thompson look good it can be simply a guy we stash at Iowa. Like you said those latter scenarios make this winter a hell of a lot easier.

2016 championship - while I'll always find a way to greatly appreciate it, it continues to lose its shine

Not at all! The season was great, the team was fun and it was a long time coming. Don't let other things diminish that season. It's not worth it

Imagine if we had lost.

I'm 99% sure the world would be a much, much better place.

It's a very convincing argument that the Cubs opened the portal to hell but all the bad things were already afoot when Rizzo caught that ball.

And hey, only 5 years later the Cubs have maybe the worst roster in all of MLB so maybe things can get better? :shrug

It is insane how, IMO, everything went to complete and total horsefeathers within less than a week of them winning, and it's only managed to get progressively WORSE right until this very horsefeathering second. HOW.

Next season they'd be changing their name to the Chicago Guardians.

Hey global warming was already on its way, the Cubs just accelerated it.

yesterday I got an MLB At Bat alert that a pair of brothers were pitcher and catcher in a game for the first time since 1962, and I wondered to myself which team had brothers on it but didn't read the article to find out.

TDIL, there are two separate Romine's on the Cubs and they are brothers.

Mildly interesting way to distract fans from a terrible baseball team. Interested to see what non-MLB HOF players make it to the Cubs HOF. If Sammy isn't in there (and he won't be) the whole thing is a sham

Anyways, anyone care to make guesses?

ugh...Dempster

I'm sure several of the 16 Cubs will make it when they retire but not looking at them yet.

I’m sure omitting Hawk was just an oversight.

And not just because he’s a douche, but Dempster? I question Mark Prior, too.

I had this idea like 10-15 years ago (and it's not completely original), but I thought it would be cool if the Cubs created their own Hall of Fame wing in Wrigley Field somewhere or maybe in a separate building nearby. I'm a huge Ron Santo fan and I was always angry that he never gained enough votes for entry into the Hall of Fame (it's a damn shame that it happened posthumously). If the writers and people who vote for this stuff were stupid in choosing not to elect him, then the Cubs should just create their own Hall of Fame to honor Cubs icons/great players like Ron Santo. I think it's a cool way to honor great players that played for the Cubs, and players with résumés not quite good enough to get into Cooperstown.

Yeah, Sammy also deserves to get in but I doubt that happens.

I went back a little further to when I started watching the Cubs. Here's my list, with the caveat that some of these guys are almost certainly a no go. But some of them were pretty big local stars on some really crappy teams:

Glenn Beckert

Kenny Holtzman

Don Kessinger (prob not)

Bill Hands

Milt Pappas

Jose Cardenal

Ray Burris (prob not)

Manny Trillo

Mike Krukow

Dave Kingman (prob not)

Bill Buckner

Jody Davis

Leon Durham

Keith Moreland

Bobby Dernier

Joe Girardi

Andre Dawson

Jon Leiber

Alfonso Soriano

I believe the highlighted have a legit shot. And here's some non-players:

Leo Durocher

Dallas Greene

Jim Frey

Don Zimmer

Don Baylor

Dusty Baker

Lou Piniella

Joe Maddon

Jack Brickhouse

Harry Caray

Len Kasper (unless they're pissed he left)
