The Ricketts are smiling big smiles today.

They’ve been laughing to the bank since the first time they sold Cubs fans on a rebuild. I’d be pretty souped too to have legions of people who say they hate me but more or less actively take up my cause. Like that’s power, pretty hot stuff

I'm pretty sure they're miserable, like most of the filthy rich

Throwing this in the intangible [expletive] category…so bare (bear?) with me…

with the White Sox assuredly winning the AL central this year with some young, affordable players and solid young pitching, they look to be perennial playoff contenders for the next 3-5 years.

Will the White Sox success pressure and force the Ricketts’ into spending payroll to prevent the WS from taking over the city favorite? (It’s a far stretch to even fathom it, I know)

The Ricketts won’t care unless revenue/attendance drops dramatically.

This is the least I've cared about Cubs baseball that I can ever remember. It's like losing a friend.
Really? This is like the 10th or 11th best season of my 40 year life. Don't even try to pretend like some of those early 90s Tribune owned teams were any fun beyond 2 or 3 players. Just a week ago they were 10 games over 500.

The rosters we played with on the video games of the era were unimaginably dull.

But this also reminds me of warning people about wanting some billionaire to buy the club. They aren't saviors and when things suck they still suck.

Although this year's .519 W% is tied for 14th best with 3 or 4 other seasons in the past 40 years.

For some reason, I don't have the visceral dislike for the Tribune people that I have for the Ricketts.

Beyond team related reasons I think it's just easier to have a visceral reaction to the Ricketts for non baseball reasons. Is that it?

Yes, that is probably a portion. But with this team going into the season everyone kind of knew this was the last season. Instead of trying to compete, they gave away their best pitcher and backup catcher to save some money. They waved the white flag before the season started. It's not something an ownership does that wants to win.

Not a chance. The Sox won the title in 05 and the next season continued to contend while the Cubs had one of their worst teams this century and the Cubs still outdrew them. Sure the scales could tip a little bit but the Cubs will draw decently regardless (though their attendance did dip during the rebuild it was still above average).

I feel like the Ricketts wanted to see the Cubs win the title and then settle into a Tribune Co like ownership. Will give the team money to spend but not as much they should for the size of the market and the amount of revenue they bring in. They want the Cubs to be decent because that insures a packed house but are not going to spend to make a good team great.

I could be way off but it just seems that now that they’ve gotten the title their main concern is maximizing profit.

If the Ricketts really are like the Tribune (baseball-wise anyway) they’ll fire sale but pay Javy to fill the seats while the Cubs lose 90+ games a season.

Hoerner's a big add, improves the defense bigly, offers a different mix in the everyday lineup

Yeah, maybe he can teach some of the veterans how to take a ML at bat.

Yeah, it's gonna be him or Rizzo.

The Rickettses will only keep him over Javy because Rizzo is white.
