I also love that he lists Tommy Phams "big"HR against the Cubs last year as one of the memorable postseason moments of the last handful of seasons and I have literally no recollection of this HR.

i actually remember it pretty well, and I am not one to remember crap like that or dwell on it. but it was our 10th straight postseason loss and i did not loosen up until that glorious soler dong in game 2 (along with garcia pissing all over himself).

10th straight loss? The streak ended when the Cubs beat Pittsburgh.

oh yeah. i'm still drunk from friday i guess.

i guess 1-10 in their last 11 still sucked though.

all i know is i was really sad after game 1.

I'm not sure how Leitch can write an article about the Cards 2016 season and not mention how the Cubs basically have destroyed the sport of baseball for a year.

In any other division this is a spirited race, and heck they have a 'winning' record against the Cubs and they're 15 games out.

Yes, this is the same turd who said before the season, "I'd have to think long and hard about switching rosters with the Cubs."

Ha! What a joke, I'd also have to think long and hard about trading my bank account with Warren Buffet's too!

or i could pretend i'm one of those guys who is too cool to count the wild card game as part of the playoffs (but yeah it would still be postseason, regardless)

The only thing I remember about Game 1 was Dexter Fowler hitting that warning track shot with 2 outs and a man on that I could not believe did not go out based on how it looked off the bat.

Yeah I literally have no idea what he's talking about. I remember Heyward's homer against us and then....nothing except the donging of Cubs

I'm guessing it sticks out in his mind like Geovany Soto's HR in the 07 NLDS sticks out in my mind as a brief awesome moment within a [expletive] ass series

And Dero in '08.

That's unfortunately not the Dero playoff moment that sticks out for me.

My favorite part is when he whines about the injuries. Let's see what we have here: A starter who is so durable that his GM admitted that they probably can't rely on him to start in the future, a couple shitty relief pitchers, a couple 36-year-olds nearing the end of their baseball journeys, a guy who has been sent to the minors on numerous occasions this year.

No, Will, injuries aren't the reason. You were right when you said that every team has them. There was no reason to go further. Nobody cares about Seth Maness being injured. Seriously, I had literally no idea he was even injured at any point this year.

I also like how Leitch says that the Cards are the team the Cubs want to play the least. Well, he's kinda right. I don't want the Cards in the playoffs. I don't want there to be any chance of them beating us. But they really are the team I fear the least -- for all of the reasons he just said they were shitty.

exactly how i feel. would hate losing to them most, but compared to having to face madbum or thor (granted they should only have to face them once), i'll take their guys.

Yeah, it's just Cardinals fans trying to save face. Well, sure, they are 16 games better than us and have completely obliterated everyone in their path, ripping the division out of our hands, never to surrender it again. But, they don't want to play us in the post-season. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

That reminds me...maybe I'm just nitpicking at this point but what the hey, he also mentioned that Carlos Martinez has quietly turned into one of the NL's top 10 pitchers.

WAR - 2.8 (18th in NL, behind 4 different Cubs starters)

xFIP - 3.95 (19th in NL)

FIP - 3.65 (14th in NL)

ERA - 3.05 (12th in NL)

K/9 - 7.56 (19th in NL)

BB/9 - 3.26 (27th in NL, slightly ahead of Jake Arrieta)

He is very good at HR suppression though, 2nd in the NL at 0.63 HR/9 and leads baseball in GB% at 57.2%, but those don't seem like top 10 pitcher in NL stats overall.

Maybe he's one of the top 10 pitchers in the NL Central.

Also he's 21st in fWAR, also behind Jansen, Kershaw and Matt though they don't have qualified innings.

On the Cardinals' broadcast tonight, as the Cubs were shaking hands after the win, Al Hrobosky essentially made a guarantee that the Cards would make the playoffs and eliminate the Cubs there. It's possible, but that guy is such a horsefeathering clown.

there's probably about a 6 or 7% chance of that happening (40% chance to make the playoffs, maybe 50% chance to win the wild card game, then maybe 35% chance of winning a series against the cubs). that does not seem like something that a competent baseball announcer should be predicting.

Well, that's the issue. Hrabosky is a lunatic homer. Most Cards fans I know can't stand the guy. It always baffles me that a quality franchise like the Cardinals has such a decidedly mediocre broadcast team. Dan McLaughlin is a fawning cheerleader, Hrobosky is an absolute joke, McCarver is a windbag and Shannon is just okay.

frequently when listening to road announcers, i'm reminded how lucky we are to have len and JD. a lot of the people out there are just clueless about advanced statistics/metrics, or homers to the point where it's painful to watch them. or they're just boring and add nothing to the experience of watching the game.

I can't stand any of them other than Edmonds, but Shannon is the worst by a wide margin. He's not only terrible calling the game, his mush mouthed mispronunciations are absolutely awful as well.

Only seven teams in the history of baseball have made the playoffs six out of seven years, and one of them is this current incarnation of the St. Louis Cardinals. If the Cards were to sneak into the playoffs this year, they would become only the fourth team in baseball history to reach the playoffs seven out of eight years; all other teams are Yankees. (1936-1943, 1947-1964 and 1995-2012, if you're keeping score.)

is there a reason why he's not including the 1995-2005 atlanta braves?

also, some of those years he quotes do not make sense. does he mean 1947-1954 and 2005-2012?

it's too early for me to think this hard. :banghead:

Shannon is the one I've heard the least, so I'll take your word for it.

I'm still vaguely annoyed the St. Louis Football Cardinals no longer exist- that was perfect sport symmetry

Though the Bears - Cubs thing is better, thematically
