Told that it was 39, Molina said, “Anything can happen. You know that. I’ve been on teams 10 games back and with 20 games left and then we win the division or we make the playoffs."

That's completely made up, right?

Unfortunately, only a slight exaggeration, as NPC pointed out.

They wound up 6.5 games out despite going 15-5. But they did win the WC.

I'm happy that 2011-2014 was just a vague blur to me

i had basically checked out (with brief periods at the start of each season as exceptions) from late 2009 until theo was hired. i was so excited that the one guy i always wanted to run the cubs got hired that i fully bought in and suffered through each one of those. i was legitimately done with giving a horsefeathers about the cubs by the time ricketts didn't fire hendry right away.

i even got excited enough about baseball that i watched all of the 2011 playoffs that i could. i didn't hate the cardinals as much then, but i still wanted the rangers to win that series so bad.

then there was the year the cardinals got that BS infield fly call. so dumb.

The Cardinals are as close to the Brewers as they are the Cubs in the standings. They have as much as a chance to finish 4th as win the Division.

They were 8.5 out of the wildcard with 20 to go.

Yeah 2011 was the year of the collapse. Braves and Red Sox, the latter causing Theo to go to the Cubs.

i may have been mostly checked out but following the last day of the season in 2011 was a lot of fun and was probably the last time something like that will ever happen again

I was in a St. Louis bar when that (admittedly fun in a vacuum) night of baseball went down with all the games ending within minutes of each other. Bartender thought my dog just died.

That was freaking awesome. Best non-Cubs moment of baseball watching for me. Mostly with the Rays and Red Sox.

On the NL side I still blame Marmol for that Cardinals World Series

Nelson Cruz's inability to catch a flyball 95% of OF catch probably also played a role

Ah. I'm an idiot.

They were 9.5 out in the division with 20 to go.

The only reason to take Piscotty over Heyward is if you think Heyward permanently forgot how to hit at age 27. Piscotty has only been worth 2.4 wins so far, and he's 25, so probably won't get much better. And he's pretty much the only debatable player.

(And I understand this is not your argument, Banedon)

It was the World Series that was determined by the least terrible managerial decision. LaRussa won because Washington was just a [expletive] hair more terrible in that series.

so, while not on brett favre's level, it's possible the cubs ended (and i'm not saying it was intentional nor am i cool with the meatheaded beanball crap) the career of matt holliday, much like the bears ended favre's when corey wootton engraved him in the frozen turf in minnesota.

Let's be clear, it was Bobby McCray for the Saints in the NFC Title game in the Superdome that ended Favre's career.

um, no

Ok, fine. I was drunk most of the Saints '09-'10 season and misremembered.

With last night's results, the Cards are now closer to last place than first.

In a way, I love the fact that this is what the BFIB have been reduced to, arguing how their fringe ML outfielder once was better for a month than the future MVP. The BFIB are just as terrible losers as they were when they were good.
