Yeah, I was super excited about signing Bradley and thought between San Diego and Texas he had figured something out. Obviously didn't know he was such a complete scumbag instead of "just" a baseball psycho, but I was REALLY enthusiastic about the 2009 offense going in to the season. Fukudome was coming in to his second season and I really was expecting him to put it together; he ended up having his best season, but I was big on him become that vaunted Ichiro/Matsui middleground that everyone kept talking about. Soriano was theoretically still the Soriano who had kicked ass in 2007 and 2008. Soto had just been the RoY, and the heart of the lineup being Lee, Aramis, Bradley and him just sounded fantastic on paper. Hell, the starting pitching didn't even look all that bad, and the starters did pretty well outside of Harden not being the stud we hoped he could be. Then Soriano got hurt again and was terrible, Aramis missed a bunch of time, Bradley was a turd and Soto had a rough sophomore slump. The ended up basically winning what they were supposed to, pythag-wise, but I was really thinking they'd win at least 90 games.

To get even further off subject, our boy Kosuke is putting up a solid .328/.402/.472 in Japan this year at age 39. And I totally forgot he ended his MLB career on the South Side.

Matt Carpenter, June 15:

"I wouldn't be surprised if we make a pretty good run and catch those guys. They haven't gone through a bad streak, which every team will go through. And we haven't gone through our good streak yet...

We've played some of the toughest part of our schedule and they haven't. My guess? I bet we can get it down to four games before the All-Star break... If we get it to four, they'll be thinking about it."

Wacha was scheduled to pitch vs us this weekend, so are we gonna get the opportunity to dong this dude to death in his ML debut or is he going to the bullpen?

well, he has been tearing up AAA...

he actually hasn't been bad outside of his ERA...high BABIP allowed. tons of Ks.

anyway, not really related but this actually reminded me of something. i remember thinking kerry wood's minor league numbers looked kinda crappy (this was based mostly on ERA) and i remember seeing the argument made on the cubs newsgroups that he was so nasty that minor league umps just couldn't call his stuff. well i just looked at his minor league numbers for probably the first time since then, and holy horsefeathers did he walk a ton of guys throughout the minors. he was much better in the big leagues from day one (and through pretty much his whole career) than he was in the minors. i wonder if there wasn't some truth to that theory, then.

Cards GM Mozeliak saying that Wacha's days as a starter are probably done.

That's a damn shame for him. For the Cards, it definitely highlights the "value" of spending most of your first round picks on pitchers.

Holliday has a fractured thumb.

Just give Bryant and Rizzo the day off.

The second it happened GRB ppl were wondering about retaliation, and saying Maddon was smirking...

I wouldn't call it unbelievable, but... Let's call it remarkable how every single freaking time someone gets hit the BFIB start talking up retaliation. Never mind that it was the 10th inning of a tie game...

so, while not on brett favre's level, it's possible the cubs ended (and i'm not saying it was intentional nor am i cool with the meatheaded beanball crap) the career of matt holliday, much like the bears ended favre's when corey wootton engraved him in the frozen turf in minnesota.
