Cubs have claimed Jacob Turner on waivers and gave the rights

I'm not the brightest when it comes to waivers. Is "gave the rights" referring to the Cubs not even having to work out a trade? They just pay him and keep him?

Cubs have claimed Jacob Turner on waivers and gave the rights

gave them to whom?

He changed it to "have the rights" in a follow up tweet. Not much clearer, but a little better I guess.

I think it's poor grammar, think he means Cubs were given the rights

North made a post comparing Grimm and Turner (I guess because they're comparable?) and talking about Turner's repertoire a bit.

I think Jacob Turner and Justin Grimm are similar, but if I had to choose, I choose Turner over Grimm in a starting role. The Cubs could keep Grimm in a relief role and benefit from having Turner in the rotation, that is if the Cubs were to plan on stretching Grimm out.

%= percentile

Turner 4seam: 5.3% whiffs (40%)

Grimm 4seam: 5.2% whiffs (40%)

Turner sinker: 6.3% whiffs (40%)

Grimm sinker: 5.3% whiffs (40%)

Turner slider: 19.3% whiffs ***** ( > 50%)

Grimm slider: 18.84% whiffs **** ( > 50%)

Turner curve: 9.6% whiffs ( bad percentile)

Grimm curve: 13.4% whiffs **** ( > 50%)

Turner change: 11% whiffs (40%)

Grimm change: 7.5% whiffs (bad percentile)

Summary: Turner has a slightly below average change, fastball, and sinker. Those three pitches are marginally below the average marker, however, so they aren't considered terrible pitches. He has an above average slider, a very good pitch. His curve sucks.

Grimm has a slightly below average fastball and sinker, but like Turner, it's marginal. He has above average pitches in his curve and slider. His change up is very bad.

Turner lacks strikeouts because he only has one pitch that draws significant whiffs and throws too many pitches of the fastball variety. Grimm has more whiff potential because he possesses two pitches that can draw significant whiffs. Grimm, however, lacks a change up, which can be problematic because it can cause platoon splits. Turner won't have this much of an issue, which might make him more appealing as a starting pitcher. He needs to locate his change up better against lefties, though.

If the Cubs claim Turner, it would best serve him to improve his command on the change up and throw less sinkers (throws 36% sinkers). He has a better change of being a successful starting pitch than Grimm.

Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal

#Marlins’ Turner claimed by #Cubs, per @JimBowden_ESPN. Claiming order in reverse order of standings, NL first. Cubs had second crack.

Young, major-league-ready, cost-controlled pitchers just don't get put on waivers. This is bonkers.

The baseball gods are telling us to try to compete next year? 8-)

So are we expecting Bosio to dramatically improve Turner's peripherals? Mediocre K%, BB%, etc.

Make me get excited over a pitcher who has a career K/9 in AAA under 6.

He doesn't walk guys, is only 23, has a good pedigree, and gets a lot of ground balls. He is literally the perfect guy to work with Bosio. He might get him to start throwing the cutter more, show him how to be more efficient with it, and show him how to get even more ground balls. If Bosio can work his magic and this kid reaches his potential, then you are looking at a possible elite ground ball pitcher with sterling K/BB numbers.

Still need to clear a 40 man spot since they are taking Fujikawa off the 60 day DL. DFA Rusin - there is probably a 50/50 chance he actually gets through waivers and Doubront makes him pretty redundant anyway as a LH starter / swing guy. Logan Watkins probably could make it through as well. Edited by Illini Iceman

Does he go to AAA?

I think someone earlier said he can't go to AAA. More likely he goes to the MLB bullpen for now with Villanueva or Parker getting jettisoned.

Parker is already gone
