Cubs trade Bremer/Arias for Jacob Turner

I'm admittedly drinking the Kool-Aid, but I'll be stunned if a high career ground ball% + a naturally sinking fastball hitting 92-96 + analytics driven defensive positioning + Bosio + 1 legit Gold Glove 1B & 3 former high level shortstop prospects in the infield doesn't at least translate to a nice mid-rotation pitcher.

Eh, some quotes from Theo in there stating they're going after impact pitching. It's Wittenmyer, but a relavent article.

 

I think I could see them getting Rusney Castillo and using Alcantara as a piece to help acquire pitching.

 

That said, I'd say our odds are better than 50/50 that one of Straily/Doubront/Turner puts up a 2 WAR season for us next year.

 

It's certainly not their M.O to rush into things, I think Raw has it right:One big addition next year and a solid short term type. With another bigtime guy the first chance one makes sense.

I think we can give him until next spring. But we're getting close to having five guys they may want to give a chance to more the rest of the year.

Yeah, over the next two years, basically the entire roster is either in arbitration or pre-arb (or already locked up like Rizzo and Castro), so eating his salary should be of no concern. If he isn't one of the top five starters heading into next season, then he's gone.

 

I might even just DFA him right now. Let some of Turner, Straily, and Doubront finish off the year in the rotation. If they plan on spending money on at least one starting pitcher in the off-season, then I would have no qualms with Jackson not even being in the battle for a rotation spot next Spring.

Have no problem with Dunston for Turner. I really want to save Vogelbach for an AL team that is in need of a DH. Think he can score a nice player.

I would be ok with Jackson taking over for Villanueva next year in the swing/long relief role. If he can't handle that, then DFA him mid-season.

They fail to make a deal. Turner goes back on Waivers, irrevocable this time, and the Cubs have lost a slot or two in the time since.
