Don't worry guys, out FO will get this done. Even if they have to give up something halfway decent. They won't let Jacob Turner slip through their fingers.

There's no reason they should have to give up anything decent. The Marlins have no leverage here.

I've seen this from several people, but the Marlins do have some leverage over the Cubs. If Turner gets pulled back he will go on irrevocable waivers. At that point the Rockies and the Dbacks would have the option of picking him up for nothing. Colorado could certainly change their minds about him, but I am certain he wouldn't get past Arizona.

While the pressure on the FO to get this done isn't Tanaka-like, it is the exact type of acquisition they want to supplement the wave of prospects coming up. Not getting it done would be seen as a failure at this point.

Its going to come down to having to give up enough to make it interesting for Florida. That may be someone decent.

I suppose that's possible, but why pull him back just to put him back on waivers? I guess it just depends on how hard Florida really wants to play hardball. They can get something from the Cubs, even if it's just a long shot. They get nothing at all if they pull him back.

I guess it depends on your definition of leverage (and of decent), but imo, they don't have so much leverage to get something "decent".

The Marlins have leverage in that they'd probable be better off optioning some middle reliever and stashing Turner at the pen for now and let him work things out during the OS and ST. Calling them contenders is a stretch, and they're about 3 weeks away from roster expansion.

To be honest, with this type of waiver, I'm not sure if they have the ability to re-roster him if no deal happens between now and whoever the negation period expires or he goes back through waivers. If that happens, D Backs are now % points behind us can and likely would snatch him up.

With this mind, it's of more benefit to them to press reset and see what happens if our best offer is Wes Darvill or something. Still, I do think that they really want Turner and are going to do what it takes, within reason. IMHO, Turner, who's 23 and under 5 years control for even a pair of our top 15-30 would be a far greater value than $5-6MM for 1 year of another Maholm/Feldman/Hammel.

I'd place the possibility that reporters are missing some esoteric twist in MLB transaction rules higher than I would have placed the possibility of getting Turner for free a few days ago.

I trust AZPhil

Good thing you said they should re-roster him then.

And no, they can't as long as they add Penny to the 40 man as expected this Saturday.

It's leverage that gains the Marlins nothing though.

We have soooo many guys that are halfway decent. I don't think anyone should fret over giving one of them up. And before you come to conclusions. Vogelbach is way more than just halfway decent. Think much lower. It's just a guy that will make Florida go "HM, he's not nothing, OK!" I'd rather the Cubs do that than take the risk of losing a nice gamble guy like Turner. Don't get cocky is all I'm saying.

But they surely have somebody they can either bump from the 40 man. Looking at their roster, Kevin Gregg's on their 15 day DL with 10 IP all year.

Cubs acquire RHP Jacob Turner from Marlins for a couple of minor leaguers. Love this pickup for Chicago.

And all it cost was a couple of minor leaguers. And at the end of the day, aren't they all interchangeable?

At least we know we've got him. I've spent the past 2 days dreading some weird last minute Dempster-esque twist that leaves us with nothing.

@PWSullivan Turner acquired from Marlins for two low Class-A pitchers #Cubs

assuming he's talking about Kane County and not Boise, and assuming he's not talking about Underwood, Blackburn, Tseng, and Torrez, and knowing that I don't know enough about the minor leagues to accurately guess Turner's value...

Arias and Maples?

One is a reliever who is 23 in low A with really good numbers, the other a guy who was highly regarded coming out of the draft but a huge disappointment as a pro.

I'd prefer it not be Maples, but I'd be Ok with it.

Low A relievers. Not prospects. “@Hawkstrat: @keithlaw which ones?”

LOL
