IT'S ALMOST AS IF THE IDEA WERE TO GET HIM WITH A PITCHING COACH WHO SPECIALIZES IN HELPING PITCHERS WITH OFF-HAND HITTERS AND HAPPENS TO CHAMPION THE REPERTOIRE THAT TURNER ALREADY POSSESSES

Not only that, even with no improvement his 4.01 FIP puts him as the 4th best starter currently on the team. We just got a league average, cost controlled starter for peanuts. That's unheard of.

I don't know, I bet we'd trade this guy for nothing.

Only if the receiving team took on his salary.

why doesn't turner strike anyone out?

my half-baked theory is the Tigers hyper-aggressively promoted him before he ever developed much of a knockout off-speed pitch and he's survived on sinker alone (Rick Porcello, Andrew Miller, Corey Knebel?)

I'll never understand how a guy like Dombrowski can make such savvy and bold trades and FA signings but seem to not have any clue how to treat the developmental stage of his farm system when they have a highly touted prospect on their hands.

External pressure.

this briefly suggests that Turner has a expected BABIP of .299 (compared to his actual .358 figure), which is one of the biggest disparities so far for xBABIP

You better believe Theo Epstein knows exactly what he is doing. The Cubs acquired former prospect Jacob Turner after claiming him on waivers from the Marlins and he’s pitched quite a bit better than his 5.97 ERA would suggest. He’s been quite the ground baller this year, as his two-seamer has generated grounders over 60% of the time.

I'd be surprised and a little pissed if the team acquiring him paid as little in money and prospects as we're paying.
