sigh

Well, I mean, technically speaking, it is. He said himself he doesn't want to do this again next year.

The talent we have is staggering. We'll have another high pick next year and hopefully another IFA feast too. The only possible thing holding them back from changing course is money. And with our current payroll, it's easy to imagine contending next year with a sub 100 mill, or right at it, type of payroll.

If they replicate their mid-tier FA SP magic and Bryant and Alcantara seamlessly transition into the majors the way you'd project from their AAA numbers, then we'd have a chance to compete next year with an $75m payroll.

But granted those are two big ifs.

i really want mccarthy

part of me wants mccarthy and lester and part of me wants nothing to do with paying pitchers big money

that's probably due to unrealistic expectations that they've created based on those cheap guys

David's post. Right there. That's our whole offseason argument right there. At least it's something different.

We had the no. 1 rotation in fWAR made up of:

1) Some guy who was a mid-20s struggling reliever and was half the return for half a season of some guy we picked up as a 1/$5m FA the year before

2) A guy who a couple years ago was our mid-20s late-blooming reliever

3) A guy we picked up for 1/$6m this offseason

4) A guy we got for one year of a relief pitcher because the Reds didn't think he cracked their top 5

5) A 4/$52m free agent

on the one hand, i don't want to throw 20M+ a year at lester...on the other, what the hell else are we going to do with money for the next few years?

I've never looked at it like that. They're pretty [expletive] great at identifying talent.

I have no idea. Is Alcantara in CF, at 2B, or not in the majors(hed have to fall on his face obviously)to begin next year? Is KB going to come up as a 3B or in RF?

C Castillo, need a backup

1B Rizzo

2B Alcantara, Javy, or Valbuena

SS Castro

3B Valbuena, Javy or KB in May-maybe Olt as a backup 1B/3B?

LF ????? Maybe Lake is a backup?

CF Alcantara, Sweeney as a backup

RF ??????? KB in May?

I can see us spending 15-20 mill on 2-3 stopgaps, I guess. Or spend fairly big on 1 guy and 5 mill or so on a pair of secondary pieces.

15-20 mill on 2 starting pitchers. But damn, who knows? We may not be done trading.

From everything I've read, Russell should be in the mix with the names as potential 2015 call ups.

As for Alcantara, hopefully he'll be with us soon and subsequently on the opening day roster.

kris bryant not being on the opening day roster next year is going to be such BS

I can wait an extra three weeks to keep him an extra year.

That extra year can eat all of the balls. It'll mitigate things if Al Contra and, I hope, Soler show up this year and succeed, but if they have another slow/unlucky/whatever start next year...there will be rage.

Opening day:

C Castillo

1B Rizzo

2B Bonifacio

SS Castro

3B Valbuena

OF Alcantara

OF Ruggiano

OF Sweeney/some reclamation like Ackley

Bryant to RF after a few weeks, Javy to 2B not long after, and Russell to 3B and Soler to LF by July.

Or we could pay to have him that extra year rather than potentially cost us games in a year where we can't afford to throw away our slim margin for competition.

We're supposed to be this unstoppable money-making machine by 2020, but we're going to purposely handicap ourselves in 2015 in order to save our 2021 roster.

If he's any good at all, you just paid like $20m for 15 games of him. Nobody does that.

If you think there's any chance of doing that, just bring him up now to get extra time to adjust.

Well no [expletive] Kyle. Nobody in their right mind wants him up on Opening Day next year, but thinks it's a great idea to keep him in AAA for the rest of '14.

So, the cutoff is only like three weeks into the season? For some reason, I always thought it was at the end of May that we had to wait.

it's really only like 9 days but if you did it after that it'd be too obvious

I know he hasn't pitched an inning in the majors yet, but Hendricks is one of the most impressive Theo acquisitions to me, from a scouting perspective. Was he on anybody's radar before we traded for him?
