It would take a top-100 prospect FROM THE CUBS to make a Gonzalez-for-Samardzija swap fair, IMO. Samardzija has better peripherals, but is helped but facing 10% pitchers in the NL, which boosts his Ks. Gonzalez already has a better career ERA and is cheaper and under control for much longer.

Oh what the hell.

At first i thought the quote was referring to some sort of theoretical Carlos Gonzalez-Samardzija swap.

The only excuse I can make is that I doubt other teams fans understand the extent of how different of a pitcher he has become over the years.

Miguel Gonzalez, 30 year old right hander: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=7024&position=P

3.3 career fWAR in 328 IP. At his current rate, Samardzija will reach 3.3 fWAR this year a little before the trade deadline.

30 years old??? I guess we could use him for a year before flipping him for prospects.

damn you see an opening and you take it

good joke

ESPN did a 2013 redraft (Bryant #1 of course), and listed Hunter Harvey at #3:

3. Hunter Harvey, RHP, Baltimore Orioles

Current level: Low-A Delmarva

Scouting grades: 65 fastball, 70 curve, 50 change, 50 control/command

Analysis: The Orioles were able to procure Harvey's services with the 22nd pick of the first round, and to say that he was a steal at that selection is quite the understatement. Harvey's fastball sits at 92-94 mph with plenty of sink, and he can get it into the high 90s on a fairly routine basis. The right-hander's bread and butter, though, is his curveball: a breaking ball with two planes of break that can cause swings and misses from hitters at both sides of the plate. The command and change are still works in progress, but there's no reason to think that both shouldn't be at least average, giving Harvey a chance to be a true ace and be in the big leagues by 2016.

Edit: I guess it's a redraft for "fantasy" purposes, but I imagine it'd be roughly the same either way.

Law also just put Harvey as the #10 prospect in baseball, right after Bryant and Baez:

10. Hunter Harvey | RHP | Baltimore Orioles (age 19)

Current level: Low Class A (Delmarva)

Preseason ranking: 38

Harvey's warming up with the weather, with one of the best curveballs in the minors and above-average velocity already from an easy delivery; he's still working on refining his changeup, but has been able to get left-handed hitters out in low A using his fastball and curve because he commands them so well.

He's probably still a good two years away from the majors but the upside is enormous.

According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, the Cubs have "inquired about receiving a competitive-balance draft pick and the accompanying bonus-pool money" as part of a return package for right-hander Jeff Samardzija.

This would require that a trade get done by Thursday's first round. Passan suspects that the Rockies, who have a competitive-balance pick at 35th overall, could be the team that the Cubs are talking to. Samardzija was shelled for eight earned runs in three innings Sunday by the Brewers but still owns a shiny 2.54 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 67/23 K/BB ratio in 78 total frames this year. He can become a free agent after the 2015 season.
