Somebody please tell me 'mineaswell' is a cute inside joke and not an actual attempt to communicate in English.

For all intensive purposes, it's pretty bad.

I don't have anything to add that hasn't already been said. I like it, but it's a good short-side-of-the-platoon guy -- there's only so much value to be had there.

I don't think this necessarily takes us out of the Bourn sweepstakes, either. You find a place for 4 WAR guys on good contracts; they're still trying to shop Soriano and even if they can't, keeping his legs fresh means there's still a good deal of playing time for DeJesus/Schierholtz/Hairston between LF and RF. None of them is the sort of player you just can't afford to bench. It would probably mean Sappelt gets to go back to Iowa though.

I pity those who didn't pay close attention to the Bum era

I imagine the only way the Cubs get involved in Bourn is if they decided to get crazy and go after another guy, like Lohse, to lessen the impact of losing the draft flexibility. I could be wrong, but with enough OF's now, it seems a bit unlikely they'd fork over that 2nd, and more importantly, the draft budget space.

As for this signing, this caps another fairly solid offseason for them. There was really only one minor move that was made that I question, but even that move, I can sort of I understand. A lot of flexible pieces, a lot of pieces, if things go south, that could probably be moved at the deadline. It's easier to buy this team ... hanging around. The lineup is potentially a bit deeper, and any decline in Soriano's production is offset with either the additions or the development of Rizzo/Castro. Bullpen is, on paper, a bit stronger, and the rotation depth and quality is significantly improved. Still enough minefields that I think we're looking at a low-mid 70's win season, although optimistically, it's easier to buy a potential .500 season.

Heyman has a new article that mentions us as one of 8 possible destinations for Bourn. The others are the Rangers, Mariners, Braves, Dodgers, Orioles, Rays, and Mets. He said we've got the agreement with Hairston, but it was evident we had interest, at least up to a certain point. I'm guessing he means monetarily, since ABTY has said Bourn turned down an offer from us. I think we're done adding (or subtracting) at this point. Maybe add a Jeff Baker type. Diaz is the last "bigger" addition I can see. However, if Soriano is dealt somehow, then I could see Bourn being revisited.

I could care less.

As Kyle said, from a pure WAR standpoint, Hairston isn't much of an upgrade over Campana. However, with both DeJesus and Schierholtz needing partners, it makes much more sense to have Hairston and Sappelt as the backup outfielders. Can't complain about the money. Very nice deal.

That's crazy to me. He had 48 extra base hits in 398 PA's. It's hard to imagine that doesn't come out to much of an upgrade?

I'm guessing it has to do with Campana stealing 30 bases in 33 attempts (in only 198 PAs) and having a positive defensive WAR (0.2 in limited action). Hairston had a -0.9 DWAR last year.

Hairston had a 1.0 WAR in 400 PA while Campana had a 0.9 WAR in 200 PA

I'm guessing that takes defense into account and Hairston can be a butcher at times.

That said, I think this is a pretty nice deal. Nothing earth-shattering but gives us some options and another power bat.

it was never cute. but yes, somebody actually thought it was an english communication once. the grandest wordsmith of all time at that.

Aren't they pretty much guaranteed to at least do some subtracting at this point?

Also, isn't Hairston the Jeff Baker type?

I don't think we'll lose anything off the projected 25 man roster. That's what I meant by subtraction. Yeah, we'll lose a Campana, Lendy Castillo, etc type(s). I think I read somewhere we were still looking for a RH backup IF, which is why I mentioned Baker.

Cubs spokesman: Renovations "will provide important new resources" to build championship. Cubs then sign Scott Hairston to 2 year deal.

I think he thinks he's saying something witty and interesting.

Hairston is a very nice addition. I'll be a little bummed if he's the last move of the offseason though. Can't help but think there's one more move out there that would be worthwhile to make, be it involving Bourn, Garza, Soriano, Marmol, Porcello, or some combination of those.

Who knows if we are done, but it just feels so weird that we didn't really do anything long-term with the outfield.

I don't know why anyone would think they are done adding. Still 3 weeks to go and Spring Training.

Looking at the lineup a RH 3B option is glaring, I would be interested to see if Vitters could fill that role sooner than later but beyond that... not an overwhelming lineup but solid.

VS. RHP - DeJesus, Castro, Rizzo, Soriano, Schierholtz, Stewart, Castillo, Barney

VS LHP - Sappelt, Barney, Castro, Rizzo, Soriano, Hairston, Castillo, Stewart (Possibly lead off Barney [expletive] Sappelt to 8).

Bench: Navarro, Scheirholtz/Hairston, Sappelt/DeJesus, Valbuena, ??????

Rotation: Garza, Samardjiza, Jackson, Baker, Feldman

BP: Fujikawa, Marmol, Camp, Russell, Wood, Bowden/Cabrera/One of the plethera of minor league invites,

Could be fun this year!

I still think "cow-towing" was the best (but not a Bummism)
