Depending on the numbers, I really like the signing. There must be a move on the horizon to clear 2 roster spots.

Any guess as to who gets traded?

Seemed likely when there was that report earlier today that he was off the market.

Perfect fit for our cobbled-together outfield. If there's no trade, Soriano takes left, DeJesus takes CF with Sappelt as his vs. L caddy, and Hairston does the same for Schierholtz in right.

Excellent. Really like the addition, assuming it's under $10mm total, it's nice to have this OF flexibility and what could be some good CF/RF platoons.

It also means Campana must be getting DFA'd/traded, which possibly is the best outcome of this signing.

I don't think it for sure means that. He still makes the roster with a Soriano trade.

I like the move a lot. Much better job this offseason than last in filling holes. This team could surprise us. Kyle, are we looking at 80ish wins now on paper?

I was just going to ask the exact same thing. This has to put us near .500 using the projections.

Pretty close. I mean, if they started the year with this team and tried to win games all year (as opposed to making dumps at the deadline and calling guys up just to make a point or whatever), then 78-80 seems right. The starting rotation is pretty good, the offense is pretty bad, and the bullpen is pretty average.

Honestly, it doesn't strictly move the meter that much on the projection. I already liked our OF depth and Campana has this nagging value that people don't want to admit. Mostly this just clears the way for a Soriano trade without hurting things too much, and maybe makes you feel a little safer about DeJesus in CF.

I'd feel a lot better if we added a reliable sixth infielder. I've got nightmares about Lillibridge filling the Joe Mather role to the tune of -2.5 WAR this year.

The OF should be fairly productive this year, assuming health. Soriano is good for 25 HR +/- 5 and .775 OPS +/- .025, Dejesus has a career .816 OPS v RHP, Hairston .825 v LHP, Sappelt is .955 v LHP (under 100 PA however), Schierholtz .732 v RHP.

How is Hairston on defense?

Also I guess this has to take us out of the Bourn sweepstakes

Imagine if Stewart somehow managed to be 2010 Stewart with a healthy wrist.

Mineaswell imagine Castro Sosa-ing up and hitting 60 HRs.

As Kyle said, from a pure WAR standpoint, Hairston isn't much of an upgrade over Campana. However, with both DeJesus and Schierholtz needing partners, it makes much more sense to have Hairston and Sappelt as the backup outfielders. Can't complain about the money. Very nice deal.
