I would rarely watch if Sutcliffe did the broadcast. He's another Milo Hamilton. Everybody's nice, and great, and his best friend. And his sing-song delivery is maddening.

i would honestly just listen to the away broadcast rather than the home broadcast if they got sutcliffe (save for white sox and cardinals games). all sorts of new and different bad is much preferable to the same bad day in and day out.

I'm sure he wants the hell out of it, but no way a job with this high of a profile goes to him.

it's sucks that almost all of the realistic options we can think of would be nightmares.

The timing of Smoltz being brought up is awfully close to the same time Smoltz started talking [expletive] about sabermetrics today. He lost his train of thought on this "new age thinking" though between commercials.

Is Sutcliffe really that bad? I think I'd take him over guys like Plesac, Stone, Mitch Williams, Hollandsworth, Grace. Pretty much everyone is going to be a downgrade from Bob. Glanville would be good but even he's an unknown at this point.

Smoltz is terrible. Sutcliffe talks at a nice pace / rhythm and is pleasant to listen to, but he seems a bit dopey and old-school to me. Sheehan would be amazing, but I don't think the baseball powers-that-be are ready for that quite yet.

The idea that it has to be a former Cub is pretty meatballish. Brenley wasn't a Cub and no one stopped being a fan because of the hire.

Doug Glanville is at the top of my list.

He'll need training on the job, but has the best PBP guy next to him. From what I've heard from him, he's articulate and smart with a non-jock view of the game.

Hollandsworth, Sutcliffe, Plesac have tunnel-vision with the game and as much as everyone wants Wood, we know little about his view of the game.

Brenly was boring, old timey and I won't miss him at all. The nicest thing that can be said about Brenly was that he wasn't actively annoying except when he was ragging on Ramirez and Soriano for their "lack of effort".

99% of baseball former player type announcers are awful, Brenly included. The sooner you learn to tune them out completely the happier you'll be.

I thought he was pretty good. The problem with the notion of "tuning them out" is that you can only do it if you watch with the volume down. Doesn't work for me with a full season of games. Brenly did have bad "Ramirez/Soriano bashing" tendencies but he seemed to change a bit in that regard. And I think there are only 1 or 2 guys they could get that won't be considerably worse than him.

I tuned Brenly out pretty well with the volume up. Same goes with football broadcasts and Neil Funk.

Also, love love LOVE the idea of Dave Campbell. Always thought he did a great job with ESPN. I doubt he'll get a look given his age and ostensible lack of connections to our FO, but I'd love him as our new color guy.

Soup Campbell? I don't think he is any good. It'll be nothing but boring cliches.

The only way to tune out a Bulls announcer is with the mute button. Couldn't be more invasive.

Sounds like the new AZ booth is Steve Berthume and Bob. Not bad at all.

When did Berthume leave ESPN? Has to be fairly recent, no?

They aren't officially announcing the pairing until Monday so that Berthume can work at ESPN through the weekend.
