There could be a new TV broadcast team in 2013. Bob Brenly's contract is up after this season, and with no extension deal figured out yet there is already speculation about him joining another team's broadcast booth or going after a managerial job. Not really sure where to begin on possible names to replace Brenly in the booth, but hopefully not Hollandsworth.

At the end of the day, it looks like Brenly will be returning, though: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-brenly-confident-hell-return-to-cubs-booth-20120826,0,860596.story

Noooo

Yeah, I'm not a big Brenly fan either.

My comment was directed toward the idea of him leaving.

How can you not like Brenly?

He's kind of an ass. That being said, there aren't many good alternatives, because most color guys are horrible.

He's pretty unremarkable in the booth, but the alternatives could easily be a LOT worse, so I guess it's cool he's sticking around. I couldn't imagine someone hiring him as a manager at this point; it's been nearly a decade since he was last working as one, and it doesn't seem like his rep from that single stint is all that great.

Brenly is an excellent compliment to Kasper. All you have to do is watch broadcasts around baseball to realize we have it good with the Cubs broadcast team.

I think Brenly is fine, and he and Len are great together. He's been worse this year though, randomly interrupting plays with groans like he's doing a Santo impression. I can take or leave the commentary, but stay out of the plays themselves, Bob.

I hope Len and Bob are back next year. Sure, there could be better options out there, but with all the disappointments and question marks with the team, it's nice to have something decent to steer the TV broadcast ship.

Who are the better color men? I usually find color guys to be insufferable.

Just from watching MLB Network, I like:

Mike Krukow - Giants

Jim Palmer - O's

Bert Blyleven - Twins

Jim DeSchaies - Astros

Ray Fosse - A's

Rod Allen - Tigers

Mark Grant - Padres (My Fav broadcast team in general, love Enberg too)

I hope Brenly doesn't leave. He has one of the more visible color jobs already, has a great partner with good chemistry, and it looks like they could be in for the long hall. That said, the Dodgers job has to look enticing to him, if that organization would bring someone else in with Vin Scully to ease the transition. Hopefully that's a pipe dream.

As an aside, this discussion has reminded me of our prior broadcast team of Chip and Steve. That fiasco feels ancient.

I don't know why but I always liked Rick Sutcliff's color commentary on ESPN. He always seemed to be very easy to listen to and not overtly former-player-meatball-ish. Though I've only heard him aabout 5 times so I can't say for sure.

I think your opinion might change with time. I enjoyed him long ago probably based on the fact that he's a former Cub. His biggest flaw is the insistence on describing everybody as being amazing at their jobs. Plus being an alcoholic without the charms of a harmless old man.

I understand this line of thinking, as the scars from the Joe Carter Era still run deep. However, change "in the booth" to "on the field" and you could be talking about Joe Mather. Things can always be worse. That's no reason not to look for someone better.

You could have said the same thing about Valentine.
