Does this mean Michael Brenly is gone too?

Michael Brenly to the booth would be better than some of the options mentioned so far, except maybe Karros. How about Adam Greenberg? He could regale us with tales of both plate appearances.

The timing is just too perfect for them to not either get someone like Sutcliffe or to usher in the Kerry Wood: latest retired Cubs fixture-era. Terrible team, looks to be another crappy year; why not placate the meatballs a bit with a fan favorite?

There's virtually no chance the booth will be better in 2013. Len and Bob were greater than the sum of their parts.

Speaking of ESPN, former Cub, Doug Glanville, also works there. I thought I remembered hearing he's a pretty big stats guy.

I could get on board with that, though he's mostly an analysis guy on there, not sure how his broadcasting skills are

He's got a weird speech impediment.

What?

Maybe I'm not noticing it, but he sounds just fine.

He doesn't have a large presence in his speaking voice, but maybe if he is mic'ed up correctly it would work out well. I wouldn't be opposed to Karros. I think he sounds a little up tight, but I wonder if he is doing broadcasts consistently and with the same team, he would loosen up a bit.

Those are the only two former Cubs I would be that interested in. Wood would be intriguing, but based on interviews he's done, he doesn't seem like he can articulate too well and make comments on the fly.

Personally, I just want someone that is knowledgeable in advanced statistics, has playing experience in some capacity, and has a good presentation style. Being a former Cub is not a qualifier at all.

True, but I think Len was the stronger half for sure. Even in a best case scenario, it'll take a year or two for Len and the new guy to build the rapport/chemistry he and Bob had.

OH, GOD, NO.

It'll be fine, unless there's just a horrible mismatch. Some of the time there was another color guy in the booth was downright painful (remember Dave Campbell?). Having to listen to [expletive] like that all year would be well worth griping about.

I wouldn't mind any of Sutcliffe, Glanville, Wood (top choice but I bet he waits a few years to get into something like this, or Orel Hershiser (haven't seen him mentioned on here yet, but I like him from the 15 or so games a year I see him on ESPN a year)

When the team is actually good they go back to dead fat drunk and smarmy douche again and I wouldn't care.

when i first heard this news, my immediate thought was hollandsworth. that would be the worst case scenario, imo.

this is scary. someone like hollandsworth ,plesac, or sutcliffe would significantly decrease the enjoyment of watching a game.

jerry lawler will be recovered from his heart attack by spring training

This opens up a world of possibilities!

In all seriousness, I think Kerry Wood or Eric Karros make a lot of sense.

Kerry is who I am hoping for, but he has zero experience, which makes me wonder if they'd consider him.

Wood (top choice but I bet he waits a few years to get into something like this

If Wood is truly interested in broadcasting and he wants to stay with the Cubs organization, this opportunity doesn't come around very often. Sure the radio job might open up next year, but I imagine that doesn't pay nearly as well as the TV side. In other words, if this is what he wants to do he should jump at the chance now instead of waiting around for a few years. I understand that he wants to spend time with his family, but he would still have 83 games in Chicago every year plus an entire offseason where he doesn't have to worry about getting in shape to pitch.

Whether he would be a good analyst, I really don't know, but I would certainly be willing to give him a shot.

In general, I liked Brenly, but his meatballish idiotic attacks on Aramis Ramirez will what I'll always remember him for.

i couldn't shake this exact thought as i was reading through all of the praise here

That, plus the repeated dogging of Soriano. He'd at least praise him from time to time, but seemingly did it begrudgingly and couldn't wait to get back to trashing him.

well yeah it's all politics, the real talent never even gets a shot at the job

like how he spent such considerable effort praising his improvement in defensive performance, and each time it would sound like his statements were ending with three elipses rather than a period, like he was about to triumph the comic insult dog him. but really, he was just validating his own previous criticisms of Soriano's "effort"
