I see where you're coming from but I feel like Appel has to have a higher ceiling than present-day Homer Bailey to get the type of love he gets currently.

Well, his ceiling may be higher but that's not the same as likely future.

Also, isn't a lot of the love simply based on the fact that he's one of the few names everybody has heard of? He was thought of as a top of the draft guy last year, his non-signing was the rare draft related story picked up by the general baseball media.

We keep hearing about him at the top, but at the same time we keep hearing how the top of the draft isn't anything special.

The way I understand it, from what I've followed, the top of the draft is strong. It's after Appel, Bryant, Gray that it falls off.

Appel gets the love not just because of where he was last year. By all accounts I've seen, Appel took a long awaited step forward this year. He has, overall, been really good.

Bailey got a ton of love coming up too, culminating in two straight top-10 prospect ratings and hasn't really had any significant injuries derail his career either

for him the whole just hasn't been as good as the sum of the parts: really good FB velo, a good breaking ball and inconsistent tertiary offerings but hasn't gotten the swings & misses you'd expect...these are all things i'm reading about for Appel too

I don't remember much about Bailey's prospect status, but I remember the media talking him up as a lower ceiling guy who was impressive to have cracked MLB at such a young age when he did break into the big leagues.

As I said, I see where you're coming from, especially the second paragraph. Given Appel's improvements this season, I think there's hope he can do a better job of putting it all together.

Manaea had the hip problem that's plagued him all season flare up but he also had some shoulder stiffness today.

And let's not forget, Homer Bailey is pretty good.

This. I think he seems like a bust because he's been around forever but his last 400 or so major league innings have been quite good.

Not that this has anything to do with Appel or Gray of course.

Kiley McDaniel mentioning the possibility of Colin Moran to the Astros at 1.1 as a signability pick on Twitter.

Lauren (St. Paul): If both Appel and Gray were available, who would Chicago take at 3?

Jim Callis: Good question. I have had people tell me each name with some certainty. Cubs pick at 2 actually. My gut feel tells me that they’ll get Appel–because Gray will go No. 1.

Mike (Virginia): Which college player gets taken first: Shipley or Moran?

Jim Callis: Moran. Right now, I think he goes No. 5 to the Indians. The Astros and Cubs are looking at him but I don’t see him as a top-two pick. Shipley likely will be the third college arm taken, could see him at No. 6 to the Marlins.

OU beats Baylor 2-0 to start the Big 12 tournament. Sooner ace Jonathan Gray: 9 innings, 3 hits, 1 walk, 12 strikeouts. Dominant.

Pretty much every mock draft I've seen has the same 3 guys in the same order at the top. Do you think there is any chance that the Astros or Cubs take Bryant or another bat?

Klaw

(1:10 PM)

My mock explicitly mentioned Moran as a candidate at the first pick. I think there's at least a 25% chance he's the guy there, maybe higher. That would jumble the top five a little - the Cubs would take Appel, then the Rockies might take Gray over Bryant, and Cleveland would hope to get Bryant if the Twins stick with Stewart.

Wow, major statement by Gray, although I have no clue if Baylor is decent competition or not. The day after he met with Theo, Jed, and Jason. :oldbluekoolaid:

I know they met with him, but someone just said that they were also all at the game today as well (shown on tv).

Baylor is hitting .274/.367/.358 in conference and .271/.358/.348 overall. The conference line is second in the mediocre Big 12 (with a big gap behind the best hitting team in the conference, Kansas State).

Probably one of the best offensive teams he's faced in conference - the Big 12 is not the SEC or Pac-12.

I have mixed feelings about Colin Moran. On the one hand, I question whether or not the power will come, and I don't think he's an elite contact guy. Just one of those feelings when you see a guy sometimes. Sometimes my feelings are way off, though.

So if I was being fair ... you look at the bloodlines, the body, the swing ... you would think he should be able to add enough power to be solid at the hot corner while hitting for a solid enough average. Furthermore, he should be solid defensively. It's a good and ready package, and he's shown a high level of performance.

I wouldn't take him over Gray, and as lukewarm as I still am about Appel, I wouldn't take him over Appel for us. But ... if they for some reason opted against whoever was left of the two and went with Moran ... there's a part of me that would be so wary of it, but there's a part of me that could understand passing on Bryant for him (personally, Ball would be my third). I can see Moran as possibly being the away version of Kyle Seager, and being that guy relatively soon.
