The only thing worse than NFL preseason is NBA preseason. Although at least nobody cares about the NBA preseason, the lunatics freaking out for Bears preseason games drive me insane.

Bulls roster to start next year?

Hinrich/Teague

Hamilton/Bellineli?

Butler/Radmonovich

Boozer/Gibson

Noah/Darko

Where's Deng going to be? Is he expected to miss time at the start?

If he opts for wrist surgery. Total unknown at this point though.

Given injury history, that team has a good chance to be a lottery team until Rose and Deng come back.

I was advocating the Bulls bottom out and qualify for the lottery, with or without Deng the roster above is looking like a lottery team anyway.

Without Rose we were still a top 2 team in the East. Without Deng and Rose you guys seriously think we won't make the playoffs?

That is still a pretty solid team without Rose or Deng. Solid enough to make the playoffs but Rose won't miss all season and Deng will play from the beginning if he doesn't get surgery, which I hope he does end up getting.

It isn't a title contender but if Rose comes back healthy he will be there for the second half and playoffs and we can hopefully be a contender at that point. We just have to limp through the first half at above .500.

The Bulls lost in 6 games to the #8 seed without Rose. I think "Top 2 in the East without Rose" is a really tough sell.

To be fair, they also lost Noah in that series and I'd say it played a major role in them losing it. They also had the best record in the league while Rose missed close to half the games.

Well, we're operating under the assumption Rose and Deng will miss the first half.

They did lose Noah, but they also had Rose for all of game 1, so they went 1-4 against the 8 seed without him(and later Noah). Ultimately the point was that they lost to the 8th best team in the East without Rose, and it wasn't exactly by a razor's edge.

As for the regular season, I think it's fair to point out that the regular season is not all that meaningful, at least in a "who's the best team" sense. If Thibodeau were coaching some of the teams in the league and the Bulls another guy, I think the priorities would have shifted and the Bulls wouldn't have had nearly the sparkling regular season mark. That doesn't taken away from the accomplishment necessarily, that's part of Thibodeau's charm. But it does weaken your ability to say "well what if this guy didn't get injured" for the playoffs when Tom is grinding them hard through the regular season.

Big picture, I think it's fair to say that the Bulls are in the conversation for the 2nd best team in the East with a healthy Rose, along with Brooklyn, Boston, and Indiana. Without Rose, I think it's very difficult to put them on that plane. They did win in the regular season without him, but not only are those not really meaningful games, but for the purposes of the conversation the Bulls are now replacing Asik, Korver, Brewer, Watson, and Lucas from the bench that proved such a difference maker in those situations. Throw Deng in on top of that, and I don't think it's at all outrageous to suggest they'd play like a lottery team.

Grit and hustle can only get you so far during the course of the season. Without superstars, it doesn't get you very far in the playoffs.

I hope they are a lottery team. This team needs to be beefed up a little bit.

and noah

Yeah, I think it is disingenuous to think the bulls aren't better than the 8 seed without rose. I don't think they are a great team or anything without him, but those games weren't played in a vacuum. It was an absolute gut-punch to lose Rose the way they did. They had worked hard all year to get the #1 seed (even without him most of the time) just to have everything wiped away in one play. They went from thinking they could win it all to knowing they had no chance. It isn't like the rest of the team could think, "hey, if we play hard and win, we can expect rose back next round." He was done. No matter if they beat the sixers (and maybe even beat the celtics in the next round), there is no way they could win the East. It was a futile effort at that point. Losing in game 2 was fairly predictable.

But they came back strong in Game 3 and were well on their way to an easy victory and a 2-1 lead when they get punched in the gut again with Noah's injury. They still would have even won that game (I think they were up 14 points with only a couple of minutes left) had Noah not come back in. There was a stretch when he came back in where I think the Sixers had 3 straight drives to the hoop where they scored right over him because he couldn't jump. That started the comeback in that game. Now, they are down 2-1 without their two best players. At that point, I stopped caring how the rest of the series went and I am sure it was difficult for the players to be as mentally engaged as they could be.

The Bulls were up by 3 with 20 minutes left in the game when Noah went out the first time. He came back in for 2 minutes in the 4th and the Bulls lead dropped 2 points. They were not cruising to a victory.
