Just FYI, that third year is only like that if we match. If Houston gets him it will be distrbited evenly, or with the max raises at 6%. Something like 8, 8.4, 8.7.

The reason we can even match is the "Gilbert Arenas" clause. Otherwise we could offer only the MLE as max, and not be able to meet that offer at all. Essentially we are getting him at the MLE for two years at which point we have full bird rights and the salary can jump. And it won't really have expiring value as he will be a BYC player and his contract is harder to move.

Tough, but we have to let him go. My hope is thaf since its only verbal at this point, we can work out a S&T. Not a ton of motivation for Houston though unless they think we'll match. So basically we could bluff and say. Give us "deamand something outrageous" or you lose your center. Then negotiate down from there and hopefully get a second rounder or bench player in a cheap deal. Once the offer is actually signed we have to match or walk; no trades.

Omer's a decent backup center, but you can find another guy that can play defense with literally no offensive game to speak of for much less than $8 million per season.

I don't think this is a tough decision at all.

Why not sign the offer sheet with the backload and amnesty him in the third year?

Amnesty is only for people that were already signed when the CBA was signed, if I recall correctly.

Does anyone recall something about something in the new cba about restricturing deals to shift around cap hits? For some reason I feel like i read something to that effect and thats the only way I could see the Bulls making that final year work (thereby having to extend him and give more guarnteed at that point)

On a per minute basis, Omer is one of the top 5 defenders in the league. His rebounding rate is elite. How much he declines if given 25 minutes remains to be seen, but his skillset is extremely valuable.

Matching that offer would be a huge mistake and cripple the Bulls imo. You can probably kiss Taj goodbye, who I think is more valuable than Asik anyways. And if you can't get rid of the expiring contract in 2014, count yourself out of that years free agency sweepstakes, which is going to be very good. That plan should be to maintain cap flexbility in 14, that's when Deng's contract comes off the books, and if they amnesty Boozer, they should have some good cap space to play with.

NO NO NO NO! To matching this!

Pretty much agree with all this. First mistake was not moving Omer earlier. You don't want to compound that mistake by matching.

If Orlando would take Deng and Noah for Dwight, I'd do it, extension be damned. It gives you a better chance this year, if Rose comes back and plays. It gives you a year to convince him he likes it here. If he leaves, you've cleared Noah and Deng off your books, can amnesty Boozer at any point, and have plenty of money for 2014.

I'm on board with this scenario. You have to give Dwight a chance to experience a big city like Chicago and the chance to play alongside Rose. Worst case scenario is we have a ton of cap space for free agents and we can tailor a team to Derrick's style.

Or you can let Deng expire after '13, amensty Boozer and then still have plenty of money to add to a core of Rose and Noah. I'd probably do the trade for Dwight (although I'm sure the CHA pick and/or Mirotic's rights would also be involved), but it's not as much of a no-brainer for me as it seems to be for you.

I'd send over SOMETHING along with Noah and Deng, but it'd be generic. Mirotic is probably coming over in 2014 and he's a major reason why I'm on board with this scenario playing out. No way would I part with him in a Howard deal, unless the extension was signed sealed and delivered as well. The Charlotte pick? Really don't want to give it up either, although I actually wonder what happens to that pick if Charlotte folds between now and when we could receive it?

That's a good question. I would imagine some type of supplemental pick given to us relative to their record in their final year.

So according to twitter chatter Joe Johnson is getting traded to the Nets which should effectively scuttle any chances they have of trading for Dwight

Yeah, they must have been told by Orlando that there's no chance they're trading Dwight there. I still don't know why you would ever trade for Joe Johnson and that contract. If they resign Deron, they have some decent pieces to be good (Deron, JJ, Brooks, Wallace, Lopez, Green, maybe Humphries). But they won't be good enough to beat the Heat, lost all flexibility, and will be in the luxury tax.

The Brooklyn Nets are “very close” to acquiring six-time All-Star guard Joe Johnson from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for guards Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow and DeShawn Stevenson and centers Jordan Williams and Johan Petro, as well as a protected first-round pick that came from Houston, according to a league source.

This is the best scenario for Howard if he wants to win. He is pretty stupid for not wanting to come to Chicago.

It might not be a bad bet by the bulls either. He says he won't resign with any team but the Nets, but he may not have much of a choice. Will the nets even have enough money next offseason to sign him? Right now, he wants to have his cake and eat it too by picking the team he wants and getting more money by re-signing there. But if they don't have enough room, or even if he can get more from the team that trades for him, I would bet he re-signs. I think this is just a threat he thinks will trick orlando into trading him to the nets. His image has already taken a huge hit obviously, but what if he were to go to a team like the bulls, have them looking like a legit contender and then walks. That would be a massive hit to his image.
