The Nets are backed by crazy scary Russian [expletive] you money.

True... but don't you have to be under the cap by a good amount to throw around the [expletive] you money? It isn't just about being willing to pay the luxury tax. If they have Deron Williams and possibly Joe Johnson, I would assume they couldn't sign him. If they don't have those players, would he be willing to leave a contender to go there--for less money than the team that had him could offer?

To be honest I have no idea how this works; I thought it was an issue of being willing and able to pay the taxes/fees/whatever if you go over.

Nah, the ways to get over the cap are trading, where contracts have to match up to a certain point. I think it's 90%. Resigning your own FA can put you over as well. In the past, you could use the MLE to go over more, every other year, but I think that's been done away with under the new CBA. Where the [expletive] you money would come in handy, is if he owned OKC. He could keep Durant, Westbrook, Ibaka, and Harden, not caring how far over the luxury tax threshold he went. Because it gets very costly, very quickly, if you go over.

afaik, you can't sign a free agent to take you over the cap, but you can re-sign your own players to whatever cap hit you so desire, understanding that the more and longer you do, the more expensive it becomes.

it seems as if i'm alone on this board when it comes to re-signing asik. yes yes, it's a risk to assume that his ELITE defensive skill set won't be diluted by increased minutes and that he might never develop the offensive skills to be worth that third year. however, asik at 5 mil or whatever is a pretty sweet deal and it's clear he has value that, barring injury, will continue to rise as he develops as a player. if we can't stomach the third year or need the room to go out and get someone, then you make a move. someone will want him. this still seems like kind of a no-brainer to me.

Even if you're over the cap you can still sign FAs, but only with MLE and LLE. I don't know if the new CBA takes away that right if you are way over the tax though.

yeah, brainfarted the exemptions. being over the tax doesn't affect that though, since teams need to be able to fill out a roster

The more I think about it the more annoyed I get about this Asik situation.

Hilarious that rules designed to help teams keep their RFAs is actually making it really hard to do so in some cases like this one. Bulls could not legally make a big enough offer to resign Asik so he gets a huge offer from another team specifically structured to make it nearly impossible for the Bulls to match. The best part is that Houston doesn't even have to pay him 5-5-15 but the Bulls do. How did the genius owners not see that loophole coming?

Posted
Didn't we try to do something similar with JJ Redick? I vaguely remember front-loading it or something so that Orlando couldn't match (yet they did). I don't see why Houston shouldn't have to pay the contract the way they designed it.

You're misunderstanding how the rules work. Houston didn't structure the deal like that. Its illegal to backload like that.

They are using cap space so they can offer whatever they'd like, within the confines of their available cap room. If we didn't have the clause to be able to match, our max offer could only be roughly MLE money. If we had cap space we could match the deal and structure it how we like.

Its the difference between early bird and full bird rights. To your point about Houston having to pay how we would, thats silly because we're already the ones being accomodated. They shouldn't be punished just because they have cap space.

Oh sweet jesus. Fisher? Really?

In their quest to find a veteran point guard, the Chicago Bulls have been in contact with Derek Fisher, and they've also contacted shooting guard Brandon Roy, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Also a lot of this Asik mess could have been avoided with a third year on his original contract. Although obviously there is incentive for a player to hit free agency as quickly as possible so maybe a two year deal was all that was in the cards.

But with a full year we'd have full bird rights, not to mention he'd still be under contract.

Word is the nets will be able to get their own big three if Williams chooses to sign there.

Johnson, Howard and Williams.

Meanwhile we're going to get Derek fisher and trot out another underwhelming team...

I appreciate that Gar doesn't want to overreact, that he has built a solid base, and that he still has one great and one or two good pieces to build around (Rose, Noah, and Deng respectively). However, I wonder whether the league is changing to the point where teams built like the Spurs and Pistons of the early 2000's (IMO, the models for the current incarnation of the Bulls) can no longer go farther than a round or two in the playoffs.

I also don't see a way out right now. You could amnesty Boozer, but who do you replace him with? In order to get Howard (assuming he'd even re-sign with us) you have to be willing to part with Noah (Deng is untradeable right now given his wrist and contract), Korver and Brewer (soon to expire contracts), plus a No. 1 pick. With Rose down until at best March that would leave us with a team of Howard, Deng (when/if he gets back), Taj, Watson, Hamilton, Butler, Teague and a bunch of spare parts.

Luis Scoal is rumored to be available, but then you are effectively replacing Boozer with himself. Scola will be 32, has a big contract and is coming off a relatively down yer (PER of 15 after several years in the high teens). Pau Gasol? More or less the same deal as Scola.

Plus, Deng is not a member of any "Big Three". He's a high-ranking member of the league's second tier. I love his game and appreciate him. But in the modern NBA he is not a superstar in the manner of Howard, James, Wade, Bosh, Deron Williams or even Joe Johnson, who is a better scorer, ball handler, and passer than Deng.

Wait until 2014.

they better be laying that foundation NOW. The Heat crap started a few years before it happened. If we're going to try, we better have a ringleader out there recruiting. Too bad Rose is a damn mute.

Rose needs to assist in the wooing of free agents. Maybe 2-3 more years of losing will speed up that thought process?

Anyways barring a trade, I'm throwing dirt on the 2013 bulls.

So the Hawks, Rockets, Lakers, and Mavs, along with the Nets are talking Dwight. [expletive] GarPax and their cautious ass approach.
