This is exciting, with Rizzo you are really starting to see the brand new core being put together by Theo and co. They will not be in contention next year but spank me with a monkey if I'm not excited as hell to watch every damn Cubs game next year to watch this new young core grow and get better together. This is how you [expletive] rebuild, and thank god we've finally got a front office that realizes this is EXACTLY what our team needs. And has needed, for a long time.

I can't believe that the Padres did this deal, considering they feel Cashner is a bullpen arm. You don't deal your #1 prospect for a bullpen arm, even if you expect it to be a very, very good bullpen arm.

I have to believe their intention is to use him in the pen in 2012 with the goal of getting him stretched back out to join the rotation in 13 or 14.

Yeah it almost makes me wonder what they are hiding.

But then I remembered Josh Byrnes is their GM

When is Rizzo projected to hit the majors? Will he break camp with the team or be called up during the season, or will they wait a full year and bring him up next season?

He hit the majors last year in San Diego. Didn't do very well, so I expect he will get more time in AAA and be up somewhere between May 1 and August 1.

as TT mentioned, if you're going to bring him up before september, you might as well bring him up for opening day.

Yeah, just read that. It makes sense, but you don't want the kid to come up right away and struggle again. If LaHair hits at all this spring, I think Rizzo goes down.

yeah, there are definitely other factors at play than just service time. i, personally, would like to see him start on opening day, though.

The Cubs have been making rebuilding moves all season. Targeting previous high draft picks that had some dissapointing MLB numbers, but still young and have upside like Travis Wood, Volstad, Ian Stewart. And I really do think 1 or more of these guys will actually turn things around and atleast somewhat reach their potential.

But this is the first BIG move, IMO. This is the first move you can sway, wow, 1B of the future.

Also....kinda like Cashner?

Just saying.

Love this trade.

Stick with the not on opening day idea to keep the potential for minimizing service time. If he rakes, you bring him up and worry about arby later, if he just does okay, hold him back until september.

Wasn't Rizzo the centerpiece for the Gonzales deal? And we get him for Cashner who might only be fit as a reliever? I like it.

Yup, but correct me if I'm wrong, they got a couple other really nice prospects in that deal as well.

But yeah I'm pretty sure Rizzo was the centerpiece.

Adrian Gonzalez -> Red Sox

Anthony Rizzo, Casey Kelly, Reymond Fuentes, Eric Patterson -> Padres

Yes. And he tore up AAA at 21 years old, while Cashner missed most of the season. I'm pretty shocked it took that little(since they view Cashner as a pen guy) to get Rizzo. I was thinking Cashner and McNutt or something like that.

Gas Lamp Ball's take:

The Anthony Rizzo era is over as the Padres have capitalized on Jed Hoyer's crush on Rizzo and their own depth at first base to acquire the arm that we needed. The key pieces here are obviously Anthony Rizzo, one of our blue chips acquired for Adrian Gonzalez, who we've now converted into Andrew Cashner who has touched 101 mph on the radar gun, but typically throws a high 90s fastball.

Some team scouts project Cashner as a starter, though he could see time as a reliever. Discussion has been that the Cubs have misused Cashner to this point and that he would benefit from playing in San Diego thanks to Petco and pitching coach Darren Balsley.

Our time with Anthony Rizzo was short. Short enough that we should probably consider this a three way trade. A three way trade with two GMs. Weird.

Padres also move Zach Cates and also receive centerfielder Kyung-Min Na.

Anthony Rizzo was also really handsome with boyish good looks.

The corresponding poll has 70% of their fans thinking we won the trade.

Hoyer says the idea of winning a job out of spring training is a dangerous thing. #Cubs

it's so strange seeing that come out of the cubs front office

Seriously though, I'm shocked it took that little. Bravo, front office.

As am I. Floored, actually.

Yeah I know, me too. I thought it would take a couple of the interested prospects needed from the Matt Garza trade, or someone like Torreyes also, whom I really like. Yet we still have Torreys, still have Garza to keep or get a kings ransom for. And added Rizzo. Wow, I am just so happy. The Cubs system is improving 10 fold, it almost seems like Magic.

You would hope, for their sake, that this is their plan. But then again, screw 'em.

Well, any pitcher would benefit from playing Petco.

True, but I was just reffering to the other trades. Were'nt Volstad and Stewart previous 1st rounders?

I'd have to say that any time you can move a reliever for the #1 prospect in a top 10 system that fills your biggest positional need, you just go ahead and do it before the other managers veto the trade.

But Jebadore took it a step further and stole a low-level intriguing strikeout pitcher, too.

Wow, good on Theo and Jed for finally getting their man.

I wonder if Theo's going to try to turn over the entire roster. If Hendry brought you here, you need to go!

*that's hyperbole, I'm sure Castro, Soto, etc are safe*

I wonder what else is to come. Theo's certainly putting his mark on the team.

I don't think Soto is safe by any stretch.

I really wanted Rizzo, so this makes me very happy. Garza for an elite pitching prospect and the waiting for awesome begins.
