ok, so Cates looks ok. Struggles with the zone? He strikes out a good amount (8/9ip in the MDWST league at 21), and didn't give up many hits (107 in 118 IP), so i suppose if he doesn't work as a starter he could be a decent relief guy? not real sure. 3rd round pick.

A poor man's version of my Tex over Prior opinion.

That's a good way of putting it.

I really like Cashner, but I've said for a little while now that he seems to be on the Marshall career path, and a good bit of that is bad luck/timing on his part. Rizzo is similarly tough to evaluate because of the cancer thing and then the PCL, but I'll trust that he's worthwhile for Theo/Jed to draft, Jed to trade for from Theo, and then Theo/Jed to trade for him again.

Rizzo isn't a perfect prospect... but Cashner obviously has his share of issues as well (not the least of which is we would have trouble finding a place to play him). I think this is one of those rare deals that is good for both teams.

Where does Rizzo rank in top prospect lists? I know BA has him as the #1 Padres prospect, but have there been any top 100 lists released recently?

Does anyone else view this trade as a steal for us? We were rumored to be offering up Garza for Rizzo.... instead we get rid of Cashner and take a young pitcher with great upside.

Wow...will he start the season on the Cubs? Or will they seriously give LaHair a look and try to cut a year off his arb years?

wouldn't it be smart for them to allow LaHair to build up some value if he can actually hit in the majors then deal him for something that will matter to the cubs? because if Rizzo can be identified better in Iowa than he was in the PCL, and LaHair can net us something in trade, then it works out multi-fold.

it's kind of neat to see that all these deals have been strung together with a very particular idea. that the front office was able to accumulate and execute such a plan in the short amount of time they have had to evaluate their new team is impressive.

You say "get rid of Cashner" as though that was a plus in and of itself.

I liked Cashner's potential over Rizzo, but since it would probably take 3 years to get Cashner up to a full workload, it makes sense to trade him rather than deal with that headache. The big questions for Rizzo are if he can limit the strikeouts enough, and how much of his jump in power was PCL related.

And Cates for Na makes perfect sense for both sides. Cates is the better player, but Na could potentially fit really well in SD.

also, what with the starlin stuff, i think this means anthony rizzo is my favorite cub.

Rizzo is now my favorite Cub as well. Even if the Castro thing never happened.

I'm waffling between outright steal and just a move that makes sense for both sides that really improves our organization.

Cashner was a maybe to ever stick in the rotation. Rizzo was a maybe to ever stick at 1b for them.

Cashner is still a maybe to stick in their rotation. Rizzo fills a gaping orgnazational maw at 1b.

We talked a lot during the compensation talks about how young, MLB-ready prospects with little service time are the most valuable assets in baseball outside of pure superstars. And Epstein/Hoyer are doing a great job of targeting those guys and acquiring them.

Gotta admit, this was a good time to trade Cashner. He could end up dominating last year and this will look bad, but if he struggles or even if he's decent but his ceiling becomes a 3-4 pitcher or worse a bullpen arm, his value will never be higher than now.

One things for sure, Hendry would have made Cashner an untouchable.

Holy crap, Lahair is seriously going to be the starting 1B isn't he?

Why wouldn't Rizzo? June at the latest.

He's 22, and this team is terrible. There's no reason to even consider him on opening day. Why rush him? Let him solidify his abilities in Iowa and call him up in September unless he's absolutely destroying everything.
