When is Rizzo projected to hit the majors? Will he break camp with the team or be called up during the season, or will they wait a full year and bring him up next season?

He hit the majors last year in San Diego. Didn't do very well, so I expect he will get more time in AAA and be up somewhere between May 1 and August 1.

Josh Byrnes said they're going to use Cashner in the pen.

as TT mentioned, if you're going to bring him up before september, you might as well bring him up for opening day.

Wow, good on Theo and Jed for finally getting their man.

I wonder if Theo's going to try to turn over the entire roster. If Hendry brought you here, you need to go!

*that's hyperbole, I'm sure Castro, Soto, etc are safe*

I wonder what else is to come. Theo's certainly putting his mark on the team.

At this point, between now and July Byrd and Dempster should be moved for whatever we can get. Baker too if anyones interested, and utility infielders who are somewhat capable with the bat seem pretty popular these days. As far as Soto, I'd like to give Castillo at least half a season in Iowa to see if he's ready to take over.

The Cubs have been making rebuilding moves all season. Targeting previous high draft picks that had some dissapointing MLB numbers, but still young and have upside like Travis Wood, Volstad, Ian Stewart. And I really do think 1 or more of these guys will actually turn things around and atleast somewhat reach their potential.

But this is the first BIG move, IMO. This is the first move you can sway, wow, 1B of the future.

sorry theo for doubting you

Until Rizzo actually starts to hit in the Majors you can keep on doubting him.

Yeah, just read that. It makes sense, but you don't want the kid to come up right away and struggle again. If LaHair hits at all this spring, I think Rizzo goes down.

Probably the smartest move. I wish Cashner the best and I really wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being an All-Star level closer for the Pads.

Does Rizzo take a spot on the 40-man?

Yes.

Nice trade, especially since it looked like Cashner would take another 2 years to get acclimated to the big league rotation. I wonder if this means Marmol likely won't be traded this offseason with no shoe-in to replace him as closer.

I don't think Marmol was going anywhere this offseason anyway. But if they re-sign Wood there's a possibility. Carpenter is also still around.

Solar

Was there some really shitty inside joke in the Cespedes thread or something I missed that has you (and others I've seen) calling him Solar and not Soler? Cause if it's a joke it's a pretty dumb joke

Good thing the Hendry regime put all that mileage on his arm in the minors as a starter then. Get out while the gettin' is good

I can't believe that the Padres did this deal, considering they feel Cashner is a bullpen arm. You don't deal your #1 prospect for a bullpen arm, even if you expect it to be a very, very good bullpen arm.

Wasn't Rizzo the centerpiece for the Gonzales deal? And we get him for Cashner who might only be fit as a reliever? I like it.

Yup, but correct me if I'm wrong, they got a couple other really nice prospects in that deal as well.

But yeah I'm pretty sure Rizzo was the centerpiece.

Big fan of this trade. I liked Cashner a lot. I remember how excited we all were to see him start that game where he was injured. That injury was the first big blow of the 2011 season.

Still, it looked like he was going to be put in the bullpen, at least for this year. And I'm extremely excited to get Rizzo. Especially considering a lot of people thought it would take Garza. Great trade.
