Hoyer says the idea of winning a job out of spring training is a dangerous thing. #Cubs

it's so strange seeing that come out of the cubs front office

I like this quote almost as much as the trade itself.

On a scale of 1-10, how sad did this trade make Scott Boras?

I bet the Nationals' Rizzo is smiling somewhere.

Decidedly lukewarm on the whole thing. On the whole, lean slightly to the positive side of the equation I guess.

Cashner's chances of becoming a starter were getting slimmer and slimmer, but he was dang intriguing and the chance was still there. I'm just decidedly lukewarm on Rizzo, as I think he's a bit over-hyped and I question if he's this elite corner slugger some are making him out to be this off-season.

Overall, they did just add two upper-level team-controlled arms and if they had concerns on Cashner, well, okay. Just not big on Rizzo, but he addresses a need, and with Castro (leaving aside this morning's news), Rizzo, Jackson, there's a young positional core that's being put in place if they come through.

I know it's like they have, a plan, and they won't let a few weeks of playing change their plan? WTF is this?

this is a great trade just for rizzo. to get an intriguing arm too is excellent.

yeah, Cates is pretty exciting in his own right too; had a really strong year last year, horrific (fluky) LOB issues aside, and a good pedigree

I love when trades just come out of nowhere like this.

I was a big Cashner fan (and the Cashner bobblehead on my desk at work will make me a bit sad). But Rizzo is our first baseman of the future and is a stellar talent. When you can get a potential star first baseman for a relief pitcher, you have to jump on that. I also like the potential Cates has, too. Good trade.

i love the crap out of this deal, actually. Cashner has a chance, but i'll take a humongous star potential everyday player over a pitcher in limbo with great stuff but has already been injured too often

Humongous star potential everyday player ... I'm not ready to go all-in on Rizzo yet. The swing needs some work, IMO, to be consistent at the big league level.

Agreed although I'd like to hear what people think of Cates.

Actually, he's probably what tips me into a positive view on the deal. Raw, upside arm with a good live fastball and a solid change, I believe.

Seriously though, how much money do they have left now that they're likely not spending on a 1B? I have to think they go hard after at least one of Cespedes or Soler.

He doesn't have to be elite to have this trade work out wonderfully.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this trade.

I honestly thought that, with the way some of the rumors had been presented earlier, that Rizzo would have costed us a lot more than this.

Really? We just gave up a high upside upper level arm. Granted, Cashner had big concerns to deal with off of injury, but that's a pretty steep price to pay in a deal these days overall, with how teams protect young pitchers with upside. You could make the case that Cashner was the highest valued asset in the deal, thus they had to toss Cates in, who I think is the clear 3rd highest valued asset in the deal, with us throwing a throw in in.

Wow, it really feels like Byrnes just completely soured and gave up on Rizzo.

He also gave up early on cargo.

And Carlos Quentin right?

Where does Rizzo rank in top prospect lists? I know BA has him as the #1 Padres prospect, but have there been any top 100 lists released recently?

I imagine the majority will have Rizzo ahead of BJax. Personally, I'm not sold that Rizzo's bat is that much better than BJax's bat to offset for the positional value BJax has over him (although Rizzo is a slick fielder at first), so personally, I'll still have BJax ahead.

Wasn't Rizzo the centerpiece for the Gonzales deal? And we get him for Cashner who might only be fit as a reliever? I like it.

Yup, but correct me if I'm wrong, they got a couple other really nice prospects in that deal as well.

But yeah I'm pretty sure Rizzo was the centerpiece.

Adrian Gonzalez -> Red Sox

Anthony Rizzo, Casey Kelly, Reymond Fuentes, Eric Patterson -> Padres

Oh yeah you're right. EPatt was the centerpiece.

Only because pitching is overvalued.

Wow...will he start the season on the Cubs? Or will they seriously give LaHair a look and try to cut a year off his arb years?

wouldn't it be smart for them to allow LaHair to build up some value if he can actually hit in the majors then deal him for something that will matter to the cubs? because if Rizzo can be identified better in Iowa than he was in the PCL, and LaHair can net us something in trade, then it works out multi-fold.

it's kind of neat to see that all these deals have been strung together with a very particular idea. that the front office was able to accumulate and execute such a plan in the short amount of time they have had to evaluate their new team is impressive.

If any of this Soriano trade stuff is true, wouldn't surprise me if they bite the bullet on the Soriano deal, and then open up a spot for LaHair in LF.

what do you see from Rizzo's bat that you don't like? Just taking a quick glance at his slash stats, it looks like he's hit wherever he's been accept his admittedly disappointing 118 ABs in the majors this year.
