As much as we all [expletive] on LaHair, there's good baseball guys out there, like Goldstein and Badler, that think he'll continue to hit in the majors. I think I like the idea of giving him a shot to see if that happens. Because then, you've enhanced his trade value as well, since we've got our longterm answer waiting now. In Theo, we trust. If he sucks, we've got Rizzo waiting anyway, if not, Theo turned a guy headed to Japan into a valuable trade piece.

Does Rizzo not make it onto most top prospect lists due to the amount of time he spent with the Padres last year? I looked at 2 recently released top 100 lists (Seedling to Stars and fantasy rundown) and he wasn't mentioned.

IIRC he's just barely eligible, so many unofficial lists probably won't include him.

The 2nd option will be used whether he comes up on April 20th or September 20th. Are you in favor of just handing him the job to save an option we'll probably never use?

No, you get him playing by midseason so that you know what you have by April 2013. If he doesn't play much this year, and burns next year's option, you have to keep him up in 2014 as a 24 year old potentially not knowing if he's really going to make it.

Exactly. I want him up about midseason so he's clearly won the job by next year's spring training.

With a real 1B prospect on board I don't really care if Lahair starts.

Well if Rizzo plays from June on I don't think anyone is gonna remember 2011 as the year Brian LaHair played 1B

It could be a fairly epic couple of months.

Just wait until he puts up a .900 OPS for two months and then gets shipped off in July to make room for Rizzo. The Kaplans of the world will go nuts.

Whoops, misread your original post. I thought you were bemoaning using the option at all next year, not the timing of the call up. Carry on.

Well said. The play here is to get LaHair lots of ABs and see if he can turn into a legit asset... be it trade bait or backup 1B/4th OF/power bat off the bench.

I like the deal, but can't help but be somewhat bummed. I have a mutal friend with Cashner (TCU teammate) and am supposed to be hanging out with him next month when they have an alumni get together. I was hoping to have a connection with the Cubs. Oh well, I should have known better.

I wonder if Theo gets a bonus on how low he can get the payroll? Granted we are absolutely going to suck next year and may not win 60 games, we sure don't have to worry about money in the near future.

Man if the nail this Garza trade, there is gonna be a lot to be excited about. This isn't our parents cubs. That's for sure.

Can easily go from a middle of the road farm system with little to no star potential players, to one of the top 5 with a handful of stars. I do kinda like this rebuilding thing.

Wow, good on Theo and Jed for finally getting their man.

I wonder if Theo's going to try to turn over the entire roster. If Hendry brought you here, you need to go!

*that's hyperbole, I'm sure Castro, Soto, etc are safe*

I wonder what else is to come. Theo's certainly putting his mark on the team.

I'd love to go get Solar now, I'm probably the only one who is very meh on the Cepedes.

No, you aren't. Soler FTW.

I don't know why people act like they're inter changeable. Cespedes should be in the big leagues sometime in 2012 if not opening day and Solar would be coming up with guys like Wells, Golden, Baez, Maples, Vogelsbach et. al. I say get em both. We have the money.

Me too. Throw both lines in the water, and see what you catch.

Because I think Cespedes has flop written all over him. I'd rather save the money and spend it on a bunch of bonus babies this summer.

They won't have a shortage of money to sign their draftees, provided they don't intend to crap all over the new rules.

Blue Jays!! Step up and give to get Garza. DO IT NOW

I really wish we could Texas to give us Profar for him.

Holy crap I love this deal.

I liked Rizzo before it was cool. :(

I actually drafted him in a keeper league two years ago.

They can do both.

Yeah, my head would explode if that happened. I think the highest prospect we could reasonable expect would be Turner, not that there is anything at all wrong with Turner.

Dempster

Wood

Turner

Volstad

Wells

Yeah? Yeah! Whatever...

When is Rizzo projected to hit the majors? Will he break camp with the team or be called up during the season, or will they wait a full year and bring him up next season?

@BruceMiles2112: Rizzo's line at Class AAA Tucson: .331/.404/.652 with 26 HR and 101 RBI. #Cubs

@BruceMiles2112: Baseball America had named Rizzo the top prospect in the Padres system heading into 2012. #Cubs
