Brett Jackson is 23 years old and did a good job AA and AAA last year, so they could at least entertain the possibility that he could be ready to take over center in 2012 and they can chose between Byrd and Soriano for left. No reason to go adding extra outfielders for no good reason other than the fact that they exist.

My honest guess is we WILL sign another OF. But, it won't happen until we know whether or not we're able to land Cespedes.

But what's the point even then? I'm all for Cespedes, but other than that, we have DeJesus, Jackson, Soriano, and Byrd. There's no rush to send Soriano or Byrd out of town right away unless someone plans on making a worthwhile offer.

No way they are considering Crisp as a starter. I'm guessing he would be the 5th outfielder / pinch runner in late innings.

Don't we already have Sam Fuld v2?

Yeah, Campana is a far better option for that role than Crisp and he's younger and cheaper. I really don't understand why the Cubs would have any interest in him whatsoever.

i'm afraid that some people need to start accepting the fact that these are the only types of players we're going to be adding for the 2012 season.

Then we also need to start accepting the fact that we aren't going to be good for the next 4-5 years if that's the case. And we'll waste millions on guys like DeJesus and Crisp in the process.

You may be right, but I've got to believe Theo/Hoyer is smarter than that. Even if they were willing to throw away the next few years for no good reason, they really ought to target guys more like Stewart than Crisp - guys who might have actual upside.

Not to mention the many, many millions in lost revenue that comes with being a bad team for too many years in a row.

i said 2012, not beyond.

of course it could just be that they're operating in extreme stealth mode and maybe we'll get fielder and/or darvish, but i've gotten the feeling for a while now that they aren't going to make any serious attempt on 2012.

when it started becoming apparent that they were actually shopping garza, i kind of lost hope for next year.

Theo and Jed have both said they've talked to just about every free agent there is. Reason being they don't want someone thinking they're a second, third or fourth choice, if it comes down to it. If an agent wants to use us as someone who's checked in on someone to the media, who cares? Our guys are thorough, probably a few traits out there that could be considered worse.

The problem is, if we make no attempt to improve the team substantially this year and just sign pointless filler, it makes it much, much harder to put anything more than a mediocre team on the field for 2013. Sure, multiple elite pitchers set to hit the market next year actually could and we might be able to sign two of them, and we might be able to find a better than mediocre first base option next offseason, and might be able to acquire said player at a reasonable cost, but all of that happening just right is really slim.

Thus, if we put off making the team noticeably better this year, we delay the point in time that we actually become a good team again by at least a season and maybe more if things don't break just right for us in FA/trades.

That could be Theo/Hoyer's plan, but I would hope they were smarter than that.

If you do that for 2012, you enter the offseason of 2013 with a very bad roster with a whole lot of holes to fill. You are looking at 2014 at the earliest, and possibly even longer than that.

Maybe they plan on a foundation of Ian Stewarts, Daric Bartons, and Joe Sainders to come to town and finally reach their potential and use the David DeJesuses, CoCo Crisps, Jason Variteks, and Tim Wakefields to build around them and Starlin Castro. FFS just sign Fielder and Cespedes. We're not the [expletive] A's.

Coco Crisp is somewhere from average to above average when healthy. I don't necessarily have a problem with acquiring him, but I have a hard time seeing exactly how he would fit into our plans. Of course, if we're moving Soriano/Byrd elsewhere for salary relief or prospects, he might make sense to replace them.

It is becoming abundantly clear, however, that the brass does not care for Brett Jackson's strikeout issues.

I've been posting about the "dumpster diving" approach of Theo and Jed, but everybody has been so enamored by the brillance of Theo that nobody is listening. I had high expectations for the new FO to build a winner in a reasonable amount of time. If they're looking for 2015, then they are failures in my book. My expectations were a solid season in 2012 (especially with Pujols and possibly Fielder out of the division) and a consistent contender starting in 2013.
