What about the fact that a team desperate for power and general offense and is seemingly about to embark on a full rebuild has no use for Coco Crisp?

I had no interest in Crisp whatsoever before that rumor, it just made me want him even less.

I guess I'm just confused about what's going on. Do we want young players and prospects or do we want Crisp, Varitek, and Wakefield?

Both. "Parallel fronts" and all that.

Obviously you aren't intelligent enough to comprehend the almighty Theo's plan.

If we are in full re-build mode, it doesn't surprise me that we'd also want cheap veterans on relatively short contracts to fill-out the roster.

Cheap and short are relative terms when you're talking about a mediocre, old OF without power or that much patience who we have two better versions of currently on the roster (DeJesus, Byrd).

Coco Crisp Decides Where To Sign

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 2, 2012 at 7:19pm CST]

Coco Crisp won’t be on the open market much longer. The free agent outfielder has decided which team he’ll sign with, agent Steve Comte told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

"Basically, we just have to let that team know," Comte told Slusser.

The Athletics want to re-sign Crisp, according to Slusser. They’ve been in touch with him all offseason, but 12-13 other teams have discussed Crisp with Comte. The A’s have also spoken to free agent Ryan Ludwick, according to Slusser. Oakland selected Ludwick in the second round of the 1999 draft and traded him to the Rangers three years later.

The switch-hitting Crisp led the American League with 49 stolen bases in 2011, hitting .264/.314/.379 with 27 doubles as Oakland's center fielder. The California native seems to prefer West Coast teams, but explained in September that he’s also looking to play on a winner and find a good "financial situation" for himself.

Dude, you're Coco Crisp. Off the pedestal please.

if he wants to play on the west coast, win, or get paid, the cubs seem like a bad fit

Crisp has a picture of a kid(maybe even a young pic of himself) in an Orioles uniform as his pic on Twitter. May mean nothing, but odd if it doesn't.

i'd [expletive] my pants if campana was worth 13 wins over 5 years.

also if he's that good, we should pencil him in as our starting cf since he's quite valuable as a min salary guy.

why ouch?

Uh, we only tolerate teensy-tiny salaries around here, pal.

I'm all for spending money on players. That should be an advantage that the Cubs have over other teams. And if we'd have given Crisp this money instead of DeJesus then I would have been okay with it (I'm also happy with the DeJesus signing). But it doesn't make much sense for the A's.

For Oakland that's a ton of money.

$7m is just over 10% of their payroll from last year, and their "big contracts" are brian fuentes ($5m), grant balfour ($4m), kurt suzuki ($5m), dallas braden ($3.35m) and brett anderson ($3.25m). i think they can probably handle $7m for crisp since their payroll will struggle to be $50m this year.

I don't know, it is a lot of money for a team with no chance of going anywhere in the next 2 years to spend on a guy like Coco Crisp. They got a very nice haul from Gio and Cahill but I don't think those guys will make the A's a winner in the next 2 years, especially when competing against the AL champs who havnt gotten any worse and a team that just signed Albert Pujols and added CJ Wilson to Jared Weaver, Dan Haren and Ervin Santana.

by this logic no small market team with no hope of contending this year should ever spend money on a veteran and should aim to have a major league payroll of like $10 million.
