Legitimate question: did he hurt his wrist in August, or is that just when it landed him on DL?

He hurt it while in AAA in August

I don't really understand all of the bitching. Does anyone honestly believe that Colvin or Lemahieu were going to be good for this team? They serve no purpose in our new philosophy. Ian Stewart isn't great, but at least he has a potential in our offense. If he sucks, we can call up Vitters. If Vitters sucks, we will explore the 3B of the future next offseason. Really not a big deal IMO. It's not like we traded an important prospect or named Stewart a 10 year starter. Low risk / High reward move like DeJesus. He obviously has the ability to hit the big fly. Let's see what Sveum can develop out of him.

The 1st time adds perspective. The 15th time is tiresome and condescending.

If you want to put a limit on how many times a point of view can be brought up in a thread, I'll abide by it, though I hope that it would be equally enforced across all points of view.

Until then, what the heck else are we supposed to talk about?

I'm saying there's a limit to how many times you can intentionally exaggerate or distort in order to express your opinion before it becomes condescending and counterproductive. Like with everything else that's been discussed in this thread, I know you understand what I'm talking about, so I'd appreciate it if you would just leave it at that understanding and not take the histrionics of the Stewart argument to a discussion of board parameters.

I know we're all busy fighting with Kyle right now, but I thought it might be okay if I gave the short version of my opinion?

I don't like Ian Stewart... but this was a good move.

I'm in a similar boat. I'm not too thrilled with him, I'm not too excited to have him playing third if he ends up starting but the trade itself was just fine.

in 09 he had 1.1 oWAR... what would his dWAR have been had he not played about 20% of his games at a position other than 3B?

Not trying to prove anything because I honestly am not sure what it would be.

He also was worth 1.5 oWAR in 2010, but he did play all of that season at 3B.

in 09, he manned 2B & OF for just 189.33 IP and amassed an abysmal -7.9 UZR (and somehow even worse TZ) at those two spots

if he had just played his natural position at the same level of defense he's played throughout his career there, he'd have played at roughly a 2.7 WAR full-season level in 09 (2.4 in 08, 2.2 in 10)

this thread is hilarious. ian stewart is going to either be no good or average, and he's going to make like 3 mil and we traded hot garbage for him. He's going to be our starting 3B until we can get a better one, and his low cost won't be a detriment to sitting him down/cutting him/shooting him into the sun if an opportunity a better player presents himself.

And if he rebounds we have him under team control for cheap! And if he doesn't, who cares, he makes the same amount theo epstein [expletive] out of his ass on a house.

On the bright side, if Stewart recovers to form (or reaches previous expectations), there's only one bad offensive player on that list in Barney. What it lacks is a big star.

Put Fielder in that open spot and the lineup suddenly looks pretty solid.

On the dim side, if Stewart continues to be bad or his wrist injury causes lingering problems, we've just blown a couple of million, playing time and a roster spot on a terrible player.

I'm beginning to wonder if Epstein's idea of "parallel fronts" is to just buy a bunch of lightning-in-a-bottle lottery ticket players and hope they all have career years at the same time.

I took like 2-3 years off from this website, so forgive me if this has been answered, but are you always such a whiny drama queen?

Your posts the last few days have been hilarious/insufferable all at once.

JESUS CHRIST, I CAN'T BELIEVE THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THIS BOARD QUESTIONING THEO [expletive] EPSTEIN'S JOB PERFORMANCE AFTER LIKE 4 WEEKS.

It's not like he hasn't done anything - he did buy a great house within walking distance from Wrigley.

Fire everyone. It's almost mid December and we haven't overpaid for anything yet!

I really hope there's more to come this offseason, but as far as this move itself goes you don't have to love it but I can't understand no being at worst indifferent.

I sure would like to see these young players who will help us win now and in the future, but Fielders still on the table

and Darvish, Cespedes, as Solar aren't even available yet.

I'm ok with this move - I don't care about losing Colvin or DJ and Stewart comes cheap for someone who may be playing every day. He's udner our control for three more years; arb. eligible after 2012. If he can put up a .260 /.340 /.440 type-line I'd be pretty satisfied.

If not, does he have any options left? Couldn't we simply non-tender him at the end 2012?

Stewarts arb eligible in 2012, so if he sucks and Vitters looks somewhat ready to take over 3rd base, theres our answer for 2013. If he looks good and Vitters impresses in AAA, in 2013 try shifting Stewart to 2nd and Vitters gets 3rd. If the both suck, Stewart goes away, Vitters stays in AAA and we move on to plan C, perhaps Headleys still available.

I'd be ecstatic. A .780 OPS would put him 7th in the MLB among qualified 3B last season.

If he can put up that line, I'll chip in towards his contract extension to buy out his remaining arb years.

You guys sure had a lot to say about a fairly meh transaction. I'm glad Colvin is gone. Don't really care much about Stewart. He's probably going to wash out in the not too distant future, but at least he has upside. Too bad they have to spend so much money on the guy.

Eventually the Cubs have to stop being a small market team looking for nothing but guys coming off down years and actually acquire some players who have a really good chance of being really good.

He's OPS'ed over .780 in 3 of the last 4 seasons.

In partial seasons, in an extreme hitter's park. And he didn't hit .260 in any of them and only reached a .340 OBP in one of them. I'm pretty comfortable predicting he won't reach 260/340/440. Maybe 240/320/440 if everything goes right.

According to Fangraphs, that would have been good for tied for 10th out of 14 qualified 3b.

So why would you want to buyout his arb years for just 20 more OBP points?

I wouldn't. I was hypothetically wagering something I don't want to do against an event in order to make the point that I don't think the event is particularly likely.

I actually like this move. I've been following Stewart's path for awhile now. His 2011 might have been hampered by injuries, but there is a psychological problem at the plate as well. The Rockies sent him down to AAA after the first part of his slump where he ended up tearing it up pretty good. They brought him back up and he struggled again. They sent him back down and he tore it up again. Maybe he's destined to be the clean up hitter for the AAA team or maybe someone figures out what changes when he gets the call. I hope someone in the Cubs dugout can figure it out, because he's got some amazing pop when he actually makes contact, which isn't really all that often to begin with.

As far as the falloff, they have been tinkering with his playing time, where he plays on the field and they did actually platoon him quite a bit last year. Baker might end up doing that with him this year if he doesn't immediately impress anway.

I'm having fun. Talking about baseball is supposed to be fun, remember?

Glad you're having fun. But I'm pretty sure no one else is.

He's entering his prime years. He's been just shallow of .260 and .340. He was at or above thos elevels each year in the minors. Its reasonable to believe he can get there.
