As for Drabek, I'm really the wrong person to offer an opinion on him, as I've always felt that his combination of stuff and perceived upside was always a bit over-hyped. I'd be fine with him as the 3rd piece in a deal, but I'd want an upper level arm besides Drabek, and well, therein lies some of my issues with a Blue Jays deal (that their top arms are so far away). Not that the Blue Jays don't have enticing pieces, but that's part of why I prefer the Tigers, Yankees packages, assuming we can get some of those teams top guys.

yeah i also thought drabek was a little overrated. frankly i think he ends up in the bullpen long term.

Yeah I never got it either. I don't think he ever had a K/9 rate above 9. And his numbers in AAA were Jay Jackson-like.

And now it appears his control is falling off a damn cliff. I like Travis Wood's chances going forward better than Drabek.

MLB Trade Rumors reporting (i.e., copying from some beat reporter) that we asked the Yankees for all 3 of Montero, Banuelos, and Betances from the Yankees. As expectedly, the Yankees...were not pleased.

I was thinking Jed & Theo asked for two of the three (which is what I would ask for) but all three? Wow.

Just thinking here

Cubs get: Rizzo, Crosby, Smyly, Turner

Tigers get: Garza, Vitters, Blanks

Padres get: Porcello, 2 Cubs prospects

My hunch is that, assuming they aren't top talent that we give up, that the Cubs might do something like that. Not sure the Tigers need Blanks, though, and not sure they'd give up 4 of their top 5 young arms for that return.

Bravo for them, though. I like B&B, but Betances could be headed to the pen and Banuelos came off some inconsistencies this year.

That said, if they said no to two of the three (as that's the wording the writer had), then tough luck for them. There's no way that Garza shouldn't net two of them. If they simply won't deal, then good for them, but if they are trying to bring the price down, tough luck, imo.

I don't blame Theo one bit, if that's what he asked for out of them. The national media hypes the Yankees prospects up way too much. Montero is a helluva bat, but he's got no position to play. He MAY be passable at 1B. Banuelos has control issues, is smallish, and has upside, but to me, he's probably a top 75ish guy. Betances has serious command issues that could turn him into a bullpen arm, not to mention the fact he's getting older. Hopefully this is Theo telling the Yanks he just sees other teams prospects as being better fits for us.

Maybe old rivalries die hard?

A package built around Betances/Banuelos would be nice, though.

I'd tell Theo to go pound sand too, but also can't blame him for trying. If they can't get a major haul for Garza, might as well just keep him, maybe even extend him.

Yeah, I would have balked at that asking price as well. I was hoping for Banuelos and Montero, all three isn't quite realistic. But if Garza isn't traded, I think an extension is a must, not a maybe.

If nothing materializes now, which I doubt will happen, then waiting and trying again at the deadline should be the only option prior to an extension.

If you go division rivals trying for him to you might as well start high loke that and take it back to Toronto. Play them against each other if at all possible.

It's hilarious that you think Theo negotiates with MLB GMs the same way used car salesmen negotiate with welfare mothers HS dropouts for 10 year old Civics

Again, even if Garza is a burning a hole in their pockets, they don't have to do it now. Even if Detroit, Toronto, Boston, New York, and Miami don't give us what we want now, it could be a different story in June and July. Who knows who will be on the fringes of contention and looking to bolster their rotation. KC, Cleveland, Colorodo, Texas and anyone else could be in the hunt. Except Houston, Seattle, or Oakland. They'll be well out of it by then. But anyone else. Ok, probably not the Mets, but anyone else.

If there is any truth to that, could be that they already have and offer or 2 on the table that he likes better than any Yankees package not involving Montero+at least 1 of B&B.

I think it's safe to say that if we trade Garza, it will be for two top 5 prospects; at least 3 top 10.

Obviously teams' systems vary greatly, but that sounds about right, even for teams with excellent systems.

I hardly doubt Theo is finding a lack of quality offers given what other teams have gotten for starting pitchers on the trade market this offseason. The Cubs certainly don't have to trade Garza now, but then again I'm not sure his value will be any higher than it is now coming off last season. A team like Toronto could find themselves 10 games back by the 2012 trade deadline and out of the market.

I'd rather deal him now than hold onto him, unless there's a 4 or 5 year extension given to him. Yeah, there may be other teams in on him at the deadline, but there may be other pitchers available as well. Not to mention, Garza's coming off a career year, is this him hitting his prime(likely) or is he going to regress in 2012?

Garza could clean up in the NL Central this year if Fielder gets dealt. IMO, Garza hits his prime over the next two years.

At least I certainly hope so. I have no issues with shopping Garza around and see if someone will offer an attractive package. But like someone said upthread, if he's not traded he HAS to be extended and built around.

the prospect (GET IT) of trading Garza is so exciting. I think I said this before, maybe in this thread, but if the team is going to be bad, i want about 100 prospects to follow. It might as well be a baseball mogul season.

Matt Garza -vs-

Prince Fielder - 9AB, 3H, 3 2B, 4RBI, 1BB, 2K

(vs - Cubs - 225 AB, 65H, 21 2B, 12 HR, 38 RBI, 50BB, 54K, .289/.427/.551 & .978 OPS)

Albert Pujols - 9AB, 2H, 1 2B, 1RBI, 2BB

(vs - Cubs - 311AB, 94H, 22 2B, 26 HR, 61 RBI, 53BB, 34K, .302/.406/.624 & 1.030 OPS)

I don't think that the loss of Pujols and Fielder from the NLC is going to affect Garza as much as it is going to help the Cubs lose two big thorns in their side.
