•The Mariners made Fielder an offer, or at least told him how much they'd be willing to pay him, tweets Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, who adds that the M's "love Fielder" but have financial restrictions.

Zdurniek or whatever his name is has denied the report, but it's the most Fielder news we've heard in a while other then the fact that the Cubs may or may not be interested in him.

I've always been more of a dynasty guy than a win now guy so I'm all for trading Garza and Marshall so long as the Cubs can get a haul in return. One team that needs both of them is the Toronto Blue Jays. They really have no good left-handed reliever and they just missed out on Darvish. Now might be the time to strike.

Their system is stocked at the moment. If the Blue Jays could get both Garza and Marshall without giving up any major leaguers integral to them winning now and without giving up any of their top 3 prospects, might they do it?

The Cubs would get their 4th, 5th and 9th best prospects (as ranked by BA) LHP Daniel Norris, LHP Justin Nicolino and RHP Drew Hutchison. Norris was the Jays 1st round pick last year. Nicolino was their 2nd rounder in 2010 and Hutchison was a 15th rounder in '09. I subscribe to the three pitching prospects equals one very good major leaguer theory because one will falter, one will get injured and one will make it. So those three for Garza. And then pick some combination of the following for Marshall. Travis Snider, Nestor Molina, A.J. Jiminez or Danny Barnes. If need be the Cubs can give up some of their prospects to balance it out.

I'm no expert on what minor league talent value equals that of very good, young, established players like Garza and Marshall, so I could be way off base. That might be a lot, I don't know. What I do know is the Blue Jays seem motivated to make a run at the AL East and they have the system to overpay and not really feel it. Someone help me out. Is there a fit here?

ummm err....wha?

What did I miss on Nestor Molina? Did he get traded or something? Here is his page at Baseball Prospectus.

Molina went to the White Sox for Sergio Santos.

Thank you.

But now of course all of this talk of packaging Garza and Marshall is moot.

Would anyone have an issue with giving Garza an extension right now? The White Sox get Danks at 13 mil/year. However, Danks is 2 years younger, has had an overall better WAR, and is a lefty which goes for a premium. Could we extend Garza for either 6/75, 5/60 or 4/55, or even depending on whether both he and the team want to go higher in years or dollars? I know we still have 2 years control over him, but why not just keep him for the majority of his prime.

We won't be ready to win in time to get enough value out of that contract.

Not at all. Just because we are going to suck in 2012, why not keep a 28 year old pitcher who was a top-15 pitcher in MLB last year? His best comparable on B/R is John Danks. 5/$65 (same as Danks) would be fine with me.

If the Cubs are not in a position to win in the next 5 years, I'm killing someone anyway, Matt Garza might as well get paid by the Cubs. He'll be worth that contract every year.

The outlook clearly looks bleak now, but do really think that Epstein and Hoyer came here to keep the team looking like it does not for the next 3 years?

It was a joke, based on all the nonsensical ramblings of people who don't want to acquire players who cost money.

Gotcha. With all of the insanity going on it's hard to keep track of who still think we can have another .500 season in our lieftimes and who doesn't.

A's Progressing Toward Gio Gonzalez Trade

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 22 at 1:10pm CST]

The A's are moving closer to a Gio Gonzalez trade, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (all links go to Twitter). The bidding is down to two teams, one of which is the Nationals. The Marlins and Red Sox may also be involved, but the Rangers are not. The Yankees and A's never built momentum toward a deal involving Gonzalez, Olney reports. The Mariners had discussed Gonzalez and it's not clear if they're involved in the current trade talks.

The Nationals are believed to be willing to include multiple top prospects for Gonzalez, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Prospects such as Brad Peacock, Destin Hood, Eury Perez and A.J. Cole could be available to the Athletics. Derek Norris is in the discussion, Olney writes.

I'm just posting this because whatever Gios moved for might set the stage for Garzas value, and it seems overall underwhelming. Norris is a top 100, but the other 3 while young and high ceiling wouldn't seal the deal for me to trade Garza.

Then again, if they do move him in the next few days, with Danks extended Garza is now the last front end starter on the trade market, or the market in general, or at least the top one depedning if anyone see's Gavin Floyd or Edwin Jackson as front end.

Still, if the best packages look what's being speculated for Gio, I doubt that they trade him. Not that that's a bad thing.

From Keith Law's chat:

Brian (Chicago)

Should the Cubs trade Garza for prospects or lock up him long term with a deal similar to what Danks signed? What kind of prospects could they get in return?

Klaw (1:22 PM)

I'd trade him, or at least try to do so (that's always the intent - "they should trade him" means "they should fully explore the market, and trade him if they get a sufficiently strong offer"). That's how you rebuild. The Cubs' system isn't in terrible shape, but it's not good enough to turn the major league team around any time soon.

Gio just went for the exact package I said I'd take from the Nats, plus Milone. Peacock, cole, and Norris, with Millone is an excellent haul.

Gee, it's almost like signing impact free agents could help.

no, no, no, the cubs farm system is a horrendous barren wasteland and their big league team is riddled with 15 of the worst contracts in baseball that all last until 2020.

So are we assuming now that Theo and Jed have decided to just rehaul the whole [expletive] thing? If they're going to trade Garza, I think we should do it before Fielder signs with someone.
Posted

If it is a full rehaul, [expletive] it ridiculous trade proposals might be the only thing to get me through the offseason.

Garza, Dempster, Byrd, Soto, and anything else they want off the current roster other than Castro and Cashner for Montero, Betances, Banuelos, Joba, Nunez, and whatever else they want to give us. Next.

Considering the return in the Latos/Gonzalez deals (and to a lesser extent, Cahill, since he netted arguably the best talent in any of the three deals in Jarrod Parker), I think the bar is awfully high for a prospect-oriented deal. Teams are netting upside and upper level talents. Much as I entered the off-season hesitant to trade Garza, if we get a trade similar to one of those first two deals (Latos/Gio), I think you have to pull the trigger and hope for the best.

Jim Bowden presents these thoughts on possible Garza suitors and returns: http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/the-gms-office/post?id=2981 (insider)

1. Garza to the Toronto Blue Jays

In return: RHP Kyle Drabek, OF Anthony Gose

...For the Cubs, Drabek shows all the signs of developing into a Garza-type pitcher despite a rough 2011, while Gose would give them another potential center fielder of the future with a lot of upside. He might have the best set of pure tools in the minors.

2. Garza to the Boston Red Sox

In return: 3B Kolbrin Vitek, RHP Anthony Ranaudo, RHP Brandon Workman and 2B Sean Coyle

...If the return for Garza seems a bit much, consider that what could be factored into any deal for Garza is the yet-to-be-determined compensation owed to the Red Sox for allowing the Cubs to poach Epstein. Ranaudo has a chance to be an effective No. 2 starter in any rotation. Vitek is a 2010 first-rounder who has eventual 15-home run power and an excellent eye at the plate. Workman is a 2010 second-rounder with a sinking, heavy fastball who profiles as a back-of-the rotation type. Coyle is the kind of player who will be compared to Dustin Pedroia because he's small (5-foot-8) and plays the same position. He showed some pop by cranking 14 homers for low Class A Greenville last year at the age of 19.

3. Garza to the San Diego Padres

In return: IF Anthony Rizzo, RHP Keyvius Sampson

...The Cubs do not have a long-term solution at first base, and Rizzo -- who had a 1.056 OPS at Triple-A Tuscon last year and was drafted by Epstein's regime in Boston -- could slot in as Chicago's first baseman for the next decade. Sampson had an excellent year in low Class A, striking out 143 in 118 innings while walking just 49.
