Goodell handled the lockout OK, but has made some dumb decisions as well (cramming London down our throats, the lockout in general, a few of the licensing issues with the NFL aren't great, too much preseason, etc...).

I think he handled the lockout great. And "cramming London down our throats" isn't a dumb decisions. It's been a very smart business decision and necessary for the strength of the league going forward.

What's your prediction on the final compensation to the Red Sox for Epstein and Pads for Hoyer? I suspect it would be 2 AA players to the Red Sox and 2 A players to the Padres.

I don't think it will necessarily be that much. At one point, the Cubs and Red Sox had decided on Chris Carpenter, before Boston backed out. Might be up to Selig to get it done.

Kind of sounds like that will be the baseline then, no? If Cubs were OK with Carpenter, and Boston demanded more, it's hard to see Selig going lower than that, isn't it?

On the flip side, if Boston at one point agreed to Carpenter, might be that Bud says "this is silly" and just goes with that agreement.

Can't we just give them Baker and Carpenter and make them go away?

With the power of the player's union in MLB compared to the other leagues, it really is amazing that Selig has been able to avoid a work stoppage for 17 years, especially when implementing measures such as drug testing. Stern has presided over every work stoppage in the NBA while Bettman has lost an entire NHL season, and managed to lose a national ESPN contract in favor of a second rate cable channel. I'd easily put Bud ahead of both of them.

I don't think what Bettman did with the NHL's TV deal could be qualified as 'losing' an ESPN contract. The NHL chose to go to a place where they'd be the top dog. I think to them that's worth not being with ESPN.

if that was what happened, bettman would be comfortably the worst commissioner.

Carpenter makes a ton of sense for them in that, they likely will need a power arm in middle relief/setup depending on what happens with Bard, Papelbon, and the rotation (Bard could become the closer, or shift to the rotation). I'd be mildly surprised if it's just Carpenter, though. I'd be totally find sending Carpenter and a low level player over.

Pretty classy by Hendry...

http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/7181939/ex-chicago-cubs-general-manager-jim-hendry-praised-hire-theo-epstein

Former Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said chairman Tom Ricketts hit a "home run" in hiring Theo Epstein.

Ricketts fired Hendry on July 22, but Hendry remained with the team through the June amateur draft and July trade deadline. Epstein was hired as president of baseball operations on Oct. 21, and he introduced Jed Hoyer as GM and Jason McLeod as vice president of scouting and player development on Tuesday.

"Tom Ricketts did the city of Chicago and the Cubs organization a great service by hiring Theo," Hendry told ESPNChicago.com. "He's a great baseball man and a great person.

"Besides bringing in his good people, he's also inheriting terrific people who are working for the team. Tom and his family certainly hit a home run in their choice. If you had to choose someone to replace you, Theo would be at the top of the list."

There is no doubt that Hendry is a genuinely nice guy.

I hated him as a GM but he does seem like a really nice guy. I can't imagine he'll be out of a job much longer.

I never hated Hendry, I thought he was a good guy to be the face of the Cubs. I just didn't want him to be the guy building this team for the future. If I'm Hendry, I'm feeling flattered that I'm being replaced by one of the best guys in baseball. Makes me save face a little, atleast I'm not being replaced by some unknown.
