"I'm sure he wants to pick my brain a little on Cubs' history," Wood said.

Now Wood's the Cubs historian? Theo may want to hear an accurate account of how Hendry had his little pets of non-performers.

I'm starting to combine a st louis IP history with the tone of most all of these posts and connecting dots...

I couldn't help but think of the Cubs and Zambrano when I saw that the Eagles deactivated one of their biggest playmakers today (DeSean Jackson), even with their playoff hopes fading, for being late to a meeting.

Obviously the situations aren't identical, but the parallels are pretty clear.

I could be wrong, but I doubt Andy Reid is going to get second-guessed for it all that much.

I'm pretty sure he would be if he suspended him for the rest of the season.

Boy, it'll sure help them in the long run!

Yep. Looking at the big picture, the alternative would be far worse.

“It went well,” Epstein said. “[Zambrano] expressed a strong desire to be a Cub and an even stronger desire to have a really good 2012 season.

“I told him we’d give him the right to earn his way back to being a Cub,” Epstein said. “Nothing would be given to him but he could earn his way back from very hard work this winter, through rebuilding relationships man to man with all of his teammates, and through some other steps that we discussed.

“We’re not welcoming him back unconditionally at all but we’re going to give him the right to earn his way back to being a Cub.”

It's so nice to have grown ups in the front office.

Why was the Zambrano/Epstein lunch thread locked? This thread is about trading Zambrano (a dumb move) and it doesn't appear for now like the Cubs are going to do that. The more appropriate line of discussion relates to that lunch, and is very much a Cubs discussion, since it is about a Cubs pitcher and the Cubs boss man.

Actually, the best they can do is let him pitch for the Cubs.

That's the worst that can happen. Didn't you hear that Theo wants to change the culture and build a winning team? Don't you remember that Theo says he wants productive players and who have their teammates' back?

what is this, west side story?

Zambrano was hit in the face by a liner in his last start.

Zambrano was removed from the game after the liner hit him in the sixth inning, and received stitches to close the wound at a local hospital. He told friends afterward that he was fine and intends to make his next start.

Zambrano had his best outing of the winter, throwing five strong innings against Navegantes del Magallanes, allowing one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts.

Yes, but you've been around for a long time and some us have even met you.

Z telling friends he expects to stick around

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-1206-cubs-bits--20111206,0,6384485.story

DALLAS — Carlos Zambrano has told friends that after meeting with Cubs President Theo Epstein a few weeks ago in Chicago, he's convinced he will be able to remain a Cub in 2012.

"All the things he wanted to see gone are now gone," said one friend, referring to former general manager Jim Hendry and pitching coach Mark Riggins. "He likes Theo and is looking forward to proving himself next year."

Whether that can happen remains to be seen. Zambrano still has to convince Epstein he's serious about making amends to his teammates for walking out on them during a game in Atlanta on Aug. 12, leading to his suspension. While Hendry and Riggins may be gone, many in the front office remain, and they're familiar with previous apologies from Zambrano for past transgressions.

Joe Cowley on the Score this morning said, if the Marlins sign Pujols, than a Zambrano for Gabby Sanchez trade would become a real serious conversation. The Cubs would have to eat most of the money.

agreed. I think this one may have some truth to it though. Sanchez would be available, Marlins(Ozzie) reportedly want Z, Marlins would need more pitching, and the Cubs probably want to rid themselves of Z.
