Goldstein on Matt Dominguez, earlier this month:

Tools Profile: The glove remains well ahead of the bat, to the point where it's becoming a concern.

The Good: Many scouts believe that Dominguez is the best defensive third baseman in the minors. He has outstanding hands, tremendous instincts, range to both sides, and a plus arm with strength and carry. He has average raw power and could hit 15-18 home runs annually in the big leagues.

The Bad: Dominguez has never advanced as a hitter and still struggles against off-speed pitches. He crushes left-handers but can look lost against righties, and some wonder if he'll ever be even an average hitter. He does not run well.

Perfect World Projection: Pedro Feliz had an 11-year career.

Path to the Big Leagues: The Jose Reyes signing created a series of falling dominoes that point to Dominguez returning to Triple-A in 2012. If he gets a shot, it's looking less likely that it will come with the team that drafted him.

Source: #Cubs paying between $15M and $16M of $18M that Zambrano is due. Volstad going from #Marlins to Cubs. MORE #MLB

Zambrano deal is pending medicals and approval of commissioner's office for transaction of more than $1M

I'd be fine with Volstad in return if we are relieved of all but 5 mill of Z's salary. I dont think his perceived value will net us very much else. If it's Volstad and Dominguez then we win by a lot, IMO.

Why do you care about salary relief? We don't have anybody to spend that 5M on.

Banking cash is fine with me if it's used to sign draft picks, international FA's, make trades to add veterans, or to ink future FA's. I'm not thinking it's going to be used immediately.

We can't overspend on draft picks anymore

Technically we can; it'd just cost us in future drafts.

I haven't read the specific language of the new CBA yet, but I'm curious about what kinds of workarounds could be used in future contracts with amateurs. I didn't read anything about escalator clauses (i.e. player's annual salary jumps X amount if player is added to 40 man roster), so there may be wiggle room for spending in creative ways.

I don't think you're going to find any TOR talents for Zambrano, even if he's free. Maybe a lottery ticket type like Archer was, but then that's a crummy return. Considering that the opportunity to be truly competitive in 2012 is pretty much gone, there's no real reason to hold on to Carlos, since 2 months of him in this CBA isn't going to be any more valuable in trade. Volstad isn't as ideal as Wood was, but he helps keep you from draining MLB value, and if 2012 is lost, auditioning a bunch of average+ starters like Wood, Wells, Cashner, Samardzija, and Volstad to try and find some solutions for Dempster and Z's rotation spot isn't a terrible option, especially if you get some high end talent for Garza.

Volstad+Dominguez+15-16 mil for Z would be OK by me, though I wouldn't love it. Volstad+15-16 mil for Z would very much make me question the new regime despite the fact that I promised myself I'd give them until at least opening day of 2013.

Really inexplicable trade. Even with the saved money, once the Cubs pay Volstad they're back at square one. The worst part is the Cubs just got rid of one of the Garza bidders in this deal. A rotation of Dempster/Wood/Wells/Volstad/? How this team sniffs 65 wins I don't know.

Dominguez sounds like a guy Theo/Hoyer would target given their apparent extremely strong emphasis on defense and lukewarm stance on offense. Not sure Z's value is high enough to net him, but it wouldn't surprise me if Theo/Hoyer want him.

Really looks like this insider at PSD is very legit. So that's fun.

So basically we're picking up Z's contract, they're picking up Volstad's.

Awful.

Epstein wants him off the team and Volstad is better than just outright releasing him. Most likely the Marlins are the only team that are interested and only because they think Guillen can keep him in line all year.

The Marlins couldn't put together a worthwhile package for Garza anyway.

Can't get too worked up either way on this one. Zambrano has run out of chances, and the Cubs were going to have to pay him regardless if he pitched for them in 2012 or not. There was no chance in hell he was going to resign, and the team won't be all that good either. They decided to trade him and get back end guy in return who they hope might turn a corner.

marlins had no chance at garza. i'm pretty sure all their pitching prospects are mediocre at best

So then 2013 we have a couple guys who turn out to be league average starters, Starlin Castro, and David DeJesus. Should be turned around in no time.

Yeah this is a [expletive] blast.

You're really this upset over this?

With Z (nearly) gone and Wood technically a FA still, no more '03 Cubs left on the roster. Who'll be the longest tenured Cub?

The only way we're getting LoMo is in a Garza trade, imo.

We'll probably be paying all of his contract just to get Volstad and a throw in.

Tim Dierkes at MLBTR doesn't think we could get LoMo for Garza even up.
