I'm not sure where you are getting your contract details WSR, but there is no 9 million buyout. Z gets a player option if he finishes top 4 in the Cy Young voting. If he doesn't, the contract automatically ends after 2012-no buyout. The Cubs or any other club have no choice to make.

Whatever Kuroda gets is likely a better deal. Plus there's still legitimate back-end options like Joe Saunders, Jeff Francis, and Paul Maholm that can be had without having to give up anything.
