There’s been quite a bit of talk about the Marlins having interest in bringing aboard troubled Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano. One report even stated that new Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen had contacted Big Z directly about a potential trade.

But it doesn’t sound like it’s going to happen.

According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the Marlins’ higher-ups aren’t bullish on the idea of taking on Zambrano’s hefty contract, which carries an $18 million salary for 2012 and a $19.25 million vesting option for 2013.

i'm sure the marlins are really freaking concerned about the 2013 option that vests when zambrano finishes in the top 4 of the cy young voting

Ozzie contacted Big Z directly?

Shouldn't he know about the tampering rules pretty well by this point?

Didn't they go out quite a bit when he was with the Sox? I'm remember reading reports on that.

Especially since the Cubs will be paying for most of the contract anyhow.

This. I think at this point it's fairly obvious the Cubs are going to eat a large portion of what's owed to him to get him out of town. Unless Theo can somehow ship him out, with his entire contract, in a 5 team trade that sends Zambrano to the Marlins and then them and 4 other teams sending us their top prospects, just for the privilege of talking to Theo Epstein.

What's the point? Might as well keep him then.

I think most of us agree that it makes more sense to keep him than to pay him to pitch somewhere else, but I think Zambrano has finally got on management's last nerve.

I agree, I do not think he is staying unless a new manager gets named and clearly states he wants to have him on their team.

I'll be interested to see what Theo/Hoyer do with Z. CCP made a good point a while ago that a new GM probably wouldn't put his neck on the line that early with a guy the fans had turned on, but that was before somebody with Theo's stature was a realistic option. Would the fans be more receptive to Theo giving Z another chance?

Whatever Theo sayeth, let it be done.

My feeling is actually pretty strong that Theo is not going to ship Z off for nothing. Z pissed off management a lot, but that management isn't really here anymore.

We'll see.

As little value as Z has now, if anything he should be traded in July. This essentially being a contract year for him, if he'll ever look like an ace it would be 2012 and if we contend, super if not, he'll have more value in July than he does now.

Maybe they can do to Z what the Red Sox did to Manny Ramirez a few years ago: put him on waivers and, when no one claims him, welcome him back with a new perspective of his value. That could send the message to Z that no one else will put up with his antics. A motivated Z could solve a lot of the Cubs' problems. Winning would also take care of a lot of that stuff too.

Zambrano + Russell + Byrd/Colvin + Jay Jackson to the Yankees for Swisher (option picked up) + Hughes.

Zambrano - reunited with Rothschild, in a "contract" year with a team that can afford his option if he pitches well, strict manager/team policies to keep him under control, veteran, contending team with fewer young players to blame.

Yankees need pitching and get Z, a young, cheap, effective LHRP, and a decent prospect. Byrd could start in RF or Colvin could be solid LH 4th OF/RF. Budget isn't impacted much for 2012 giving them room for FA starter. Depth at catcher still can be used as trade bait to obtain another starter.

Cubs get a middle of the order bat on a 1-year deal. Hughes has been disappointing but may benefit from change of scenary. Swisher starts in RF and possible platoon with LaHair at 1B ( if Pujols/Fielder not signed).

Zambrano got on the previous management's last nerve. The new management is not the same as the old management.

I think if The Yankees were ever going to trade for Zambrano it would have been this past summer.

Zambrano officially signed a contract Saturday to pitch for Los Caribes de Anzoátegui in the Venezuelan Winter League, and he'll start Sunday in Valencia, Venezuela, facing Navegantes del Magallanes.

Since Hendry is gone and manager Mike Quade may be next, Zambrano has told friends he's willing to stay in Chicago and hopes Epstein will give him a clean slate in 2012.

Z did not pitch today for the Caribes.

Sullivan messed up the article a bit. Here are other quotes from the article:

Zambrano, who hasn't pitched in a game since his final Cubs outing on Aug. 12 in Atlanta, will throw a 30-pitch simulated game against rookies on Tuesday.

"Our stadium is going to be sold out, for sure, in his first start here (on Nov. 11)," Moscatel said. "It's big news, in all the papers today. This is very exciting."

Thanks. I probably should have clicked the link.

It's been a few years since he's pitched in the VWL.
