Sullivan burying news again... this time about Wood

Cubs reliever Kerry Wood said on "Chicago Tribune Live" he plans to return. Wood said he had a brief conversation with Epstein last week in the Wrigley Field clubhouse, where Wood has been rehabbing after arthroscopic knee surgery.

"I'm sure he wants to pick my brain a little on Cubs' history," Wood said.

Epstein would not comment on his offseason plans, but there's little doubt the Cubs would like Wood to return in 2012.

Yeah, Wood also said in that interview that he won't play for anybody but the Cubs. It's Cubs or retirement.

I wonder if they'll give him a contract like they did Wakefield with an annual team option.

From MLBTR:

Yankees - The Yankees' offseason is all about their search for starting pitching, though they'll look to add bench help and a second left-handed reliever as well.

I proposed this deal 2 weeks ago and it still looks like what the Yankees are looking for (perhaps with a little tweaking with players/money) :

Zambrano + Russell + Byrd/Colvin + Jay Jackson to the Yankees for Swisher (option picked up) + Hughes.

Zambrano - reunited with Rothschild, in a "contract" year with a team that can afford his option if he pitches well, strict manager/team policies to keep him under control, veteran, contending team with fewer young players to blame.

Yankees need pitching and get Z, a young, cheap, effective LHRP, and a decent prospect. Byrd could start in RF or Colvin could be solid LH 4th OF/RF. Budget isn't impacted much for 2012 giving them room for FA starter. Depth at catcher still can be used as trade bait to obtain another starter.

Cubs get a middle of the order bat on a 1-year deal. Hughes has been disappointing but may benefit from change of scenary. Swisher starts in RF and possible platoon with LaHair at 1B ( if Pujols/Fielder not signed).

It's been put out there NUMEROUS times that the Yankees have no interest in Zambrano. The fact that he loses a significant chunk of value in switching to the AL is another strike against. Enough with the Yankees proposals.

I think the most likely outcome is that the Cubs try to work things out. If a trade does happen, what does everyone see as the most likely trade partner for Z?

I'm thinking Marlins due to the Guillen connection + opening a new stadium.

I would agree with you about the Marlins. Z does have a NTC so I'm sure he would prefer the NL over the AL. The only way I could see an AL team would be a big market team (NY, Boston, etc.) where they could afford to offer him an extension if he pitched well in 2012.

You can rule out any smart AL team and most of the dumb ones.

Yeah, other than the Cubs, I think the Marlins would be the team that would value Z the most.

My requirements for trading Z would either be getting at least half his salary paid, in this case I wouldn't expect much of anything in return or if we pay most or all of his contract, then I'd expect 2 bottom half top 10 prospects from that team's system. If neither of these scenarios develop, then keep him and expect a decent 3 or solid 4 starter's production.

z's trade value currently is nonexistant. the best the cubs can do, is unload him and his contract. if they offered him and got back a case of ballpark brawts, they'd take it just to get rid of the contract. i wouldnt expect anything substantial in return, as this is obviously a huge salary dump

Actually, the best they can do is let him pitch for the Cubs.

That's the worst that can happen. Didn't you hear that Theo wants to change the culture and build a winning team? Don't you remember that Theo says he wants productive players and who have their teammates' back? How does Z fit into any of those? Has he suddenly see the light and will shape up? You want to bring back an overpaid malcontent who attacked his teammates, quit on the team and is non-productive? No thanks.

This is the showcase tour. Z has little value right now and if shows something now, maybe a team will be interested. I'm sure we may have to eat some $$$, but Theo knows that Z can't be brought back.

Face the facts. It's Ricketts that's in love with Wood, not Theo. Retire.

Z is in a walk year. If he's ever going to get back to where he was, it'd be this upcoming seasob, because he'd like another bigtime contract. No, I don't think he will have a GREAT season, but throwing up a 3 WAR year is very plausible for him. So, unless you either get something substantial or lots of salary relief, you keep him. As far as Kerry Wood goes, I don't see how anyone would be complaining about having a veteran presence and a class act around on a smaller than the market would dictate type of contract. We may not truly need bullpen help, depending on what they do with Shark and Cashner, but who cares? Wood has value at 2 mill or less per year and we'll find ways to use him.

Epstein also talked about making good use of the assets that were already in place, assets that were underutilized before. He also specifically said he's willing to consider Zambrano coming back for 2012.

Epstein says everything and nothing. It's all just PR-speak. People need to stop reading what they want into it, because you can read anything into it.

I totally agree, especially about the manager's job. Either he hasn't made his mind up about some important decisions (manager, Zambrano, FAs, etc.) or he's not telling anybody anything.

Why the hell do you hate Kerry Wood so much? He took a huge discount to stay here and pitched well. This isn't the first time I've seen you blasting him. I'm guessing "14 wins" is going to come up in your response somewhere.

Now Wood's the Cubs historian? Theo may want to hear an accurate account of how Hendry had his little pets of non-performers.
