Given Hendry's past history, I think the Cubs would have pulled him from the rotation when he had that horrific June in 2012 and the bullpen was terrible, but who knows.

@Rontrarian: Mark Appel's fastball isn't 97-98 mph. He was 91-93 last night (T94); same as last week.

Besides, it's easy to build a great farm system when you inherit a bunch of pitchers you can trade for prospects and are allowed to divert all your money to IFAs.

Sure, Rumplestiltskin spun straw into gold, but that's easy to do when you have so much straw to work with and time to do it. We're not giving enough credit to the guy that provided all the straw.

Yeah. That's totally what happened.

Certainly closer to the truth than the handwaving you constantly do about how easy it is to do things right.

Right here meaning netting (often significant) value in every deal, and hitting on all significant draft and IFA picks. Practically every deal they've made has improved the organization overall, and if you take into account the difference in player development, even the assets that were here have improved stock markedly.

We're a long way from spiking the football on the 2012 draft.

And the "net significant value in every deal" metric is probably true, but it ignores the fact that they've had some assets depreciate significantly because they were holding out for such a deal.

Aside from not going all out in the Darvish/Tanaka/Cespedes races (I'm not 100% convinced they had the resources to do so with the Japanese pitchers, but that's debatable), this has been my chief complaint with the FO. Nobody is prescient enough to know precisely when a player will be at peak value, but they've fudged a few great "sell high" opportunities by holding out. A couple of the guys they could have received solid but not spectacular returns for ended up with virtually no value, Schierholtz being the most notable in my mind. Barney, too.

On the trades that they have made, they've done very well. But you're right, we can't ignore the ones they haven't made.

The Dempster and Garza trades were fine, but aren't really the foundation for the "great farm system" reputation. (I like Hendricks and think he could be effective; Ramirez has been surprisingly good; and I'm still hopeful that Edwards will be pretty good in whatever role, although I no longer think it will be as a good rotation starter. Olt, Villanueva, Grimm, busts or insignificant.)

I don't think McKinney is either, and conceptually I see him primarily as the "other" pitcher, Russell as the Samardz value.

So I kinda see Russell as really being the only big-time core guy that came via trade of inherited pitchers.

Bryant, Baez, Soler, Alcantara, non-trade guys.

Arrieta was a pitcher trade, non-inherited.

The real problem is that guys like Barney and Schierholz have never had any real value.

Not really, and certainly no long term value, but they absolutely could have gotten something decent for Barney prior to 2013 and for Schierholtz at the deadline last season (and indeed there were many reports that there was interest in both players). Nate was hitting and hitting for some power last year, and that is a commodity these days. I thought for sure he wouldn't be as good this year, but I had no idea he'd stink outright.

I also thought they were playing chicken with Garza's health when holding out for a good return, but I feel they got a pretty good return for him in the end.

Posters at PSD are claiming that it was said on CSN (during the Cubs game, I presume) on one of the updates that the Sox are starting Rodon in the MLB bullpen but I've seen that literally nowhere else...huh?

I saw a tweet that said he was going to be used in the bullpen, but I took that to mean in MiLB.

Yes, I did a double take. They're bringing him up. Not unprecedented I suppose (Leake) but unexpected to me.

That would be a very White Sox move.

At least the Sox can get some MLB innings before his TJS in 6 weeks.

I saw a a tweet today that distinctly said that he'll be relieving in the minors this season. They compared it to what Sale did the year he was drafted; maybe CSN confused the Sale in the minors part with Sale also getting to the bigs that year.
