I was watching MLB Network and they were saying Wells was really bad in the 2nd half of the season. I took their word for it, because frankly I didn't pay any attention to the team after the break. But I looked up his stats, and he was actually very good after the break.

How many wins did he have?

Went 4-7 both halves of the season.

His ERA was significantly lower in the second half, but a closer look at some of his other numbers shows he actually may have pitched worse in the second half. His BB/9, K/9, HR/9, SO/BB, etc., were all worse in the second half. His H/9 was a little better though.

The MLB network is so freaking bad.

I briefly saw a 30 clubs in 30 days episode, I can't remember which team. Harlod Renyolds unloaded this gem (parahprasing), "In order to be more consistent they need to get better as a team". What the [expletive] is that supposed to mean?

I think that was just Harold's attempt to take over for Joe Morgan's role of a vet who has no business commenting on baseball.

And it's still much better than any of the baseball programming on ESPN.

Not sure how Harold can be this guy when the show also has Mitch Williams sitting right next to him.

Yeah, Mitch is an absolute moron. My favorite was when he was saying he wouldn't trade Ryan Howard for Pujols straight up.

MLB Network is a mixed bag, totally depending on who is on any given show. It's still much better than ESPN.

While it is watered down and there's enough there to remind some of when Silva was passable with the Twins, I don't see anything there that a team would want that wouldn't include anything of value minus paying what the Cubs owe him.

Wells: like I mentioned in the locked thread, he is going to be undervalued based of his avg. FB, age, lack of projection, reliance on deception and breaking ball. That is true, especially with the Cubs FO.

I think he'll be the long man out of the pen before he gets cut personally. Cubs will try to get SOMETHING out of the 8 mill we still have to pay him. If they can get a couple of mill to be paid by another team though, I think he'll get dealt and Coleman will take that role for us.

I can't imagine him not becoming a bigger cancer if he isn't starting. This is someone who penciled himself as the fourth starter. Then you factor he's a sinkerballer who has never really been in the pen and combine bad attitude and an inability to adjust to the usage with possibly overthrowing the sinker and I can't see it ending well but its a definite possibility.

While he hasn't pitched in relief much recently, his first two years in the big leagues were almost exclusively as a reliever. Out of his first 130 MLB appearances, 129 were out of the bullpen.

I thought we only owed him 6 mil this season, after the Mariners picked up 5.5 of his 11.5 salary?

If I had to guess how this plays out, Hendry is probably trying to trade him right now but wont find a taker. He'll probably push Cashner into the pen and let Silva start a few times. Those starts wont go well, we'll cut Silva, and try to move Cashner back into the rotation but probably give him a minor arm injury in the process of stretching him back out. We'll watch Coleman get pounded for a few weeks until Cashner is ready to start pitching again. Cashner will be ineffective and an MRI will show a tear in his elbow. He'll miss the next year after Tommy John surgery, and be stuck in the pen permanently after that, as he "couldn't handle a starter's workload." On the fringes of playoff contention at about 6 games back, we'll trade for Paul Maholm for the stretch run. We wont give up too much to acquire him, but Hendry will resign him to an overly expensive contract in the offseason. Probably about 3 years, 18 mil.

The Cubs have to pay the 2 million buyout for his option year next year.

Forever the optimist.

Yeah this sounds about right.

I want them to cut Silva just to prove that MLB Gm's know a little something about sunk cost.

MLBTR is reporting that the Nationals could be shopping IRod, who is owed $3 million for this year. Obviously he's pretty far over the hill, but what about:

Silva plus $4-5 million for IRod and then cut/trade Hill. Maybe throw in a prospect both ways to make it work.

The Cubs aren't going to cut Koyie Hill. He's extremely popular in the clubhouse and Hendry/Quade love him.

If they actually follow through with the stated plan of Soto getting 140 starts then who gives a [expletive]? The backup catcher not being awful with the bat only matters if they're going to be stupid and inexplicably "platoon" Soto, in which case they're fucked to begin with.
