So...

Miami is in trouble. Sounds like this is Yahoo's 10/10 article they were talking about back in April/May. The article has everything in it from giving recruits money to prostitution to lodging and even paying for abortions when football players got strippers pregnant. Football and bball coaches are named as well. Really good read. For Bears' fans, this booster apparently bought Devin Hester an engagement ring and thousands of dollars in suits, clothing, and lodging. Devin's name is littered throughout.

If even half of all this is true, Miami is going to get crushed by the NCAA.

No doubt.

His admission of eviscerating the NCAA rulebook with either the clear or tacit knowledge of so many Miami leaders will create one of the biggest scandals in college sports history. Last March he chose to contact the NCAA by mail. By May enforcement staffers, with a court reporter in tow, were spending days hearing his testimony and sorting through his documented proof. On Monday they hit campus in Coral Gables.

As Shapiro tells it, for much of the 2000s Miami football was a de facto professional team and he was the owner. He said the NCAA investigators he’s been working with have compared it to the 1986 case against Southern Methodist, which led to the only “death penalty” punishment in history.

“They said it’s the biggest thing they’ve ever seen,” Shapiro said.

When it came to Hurricane players, Shapiro said he hosted opulent parties, handed over payouts, even set up his own professional sports agency to represent his friends, all while coaches, staffers and administrators either knew or should have known. Shapiro provided years of credit card statements, bank records, phone bills, emails and thousands of photos. Yahoo! Sports tracked down dozens of corroborating witnesses to back up his claims.

I'm about halfway through the story and my favorite part thus far are the two times the article says that so and so wished to remain anonymous because they fear reprisals from current or former Miami players.

Robert Marve who transferred to Purdue is heavily implicated in the Miami stuff. I'm worried they might take away our win against Ball State last year.

random question: could players like Rix and Tebow sue him, seeing as he was offering money to incur injury?

back in NCAA 05 or 04, whichever one let you create custom signs for your fans to hold up, my buddy would always come over and play as FSU. So I changed all my signs to say "CHRIS RIX Sox DIX"

I am going to be very disappointed if the Yahoo 10 story is Miami. Maybe back in '87 or in 2001, but not now. North Carolina is just as big of a story now. Ive really been expecting an SEC team.

What was this "Yahoo 10" stuff?

No way though. It's still Miami and this is [expletive] huge. This is the most thorough and detailed investigation to nail a program since SMU.

Basically Yahoo has been pimping a huge story for most of the summer, been thinking it would have been a program more relavant today the way its been hyped up (LSU, Bama, and Auburn were three of the programs thought to be at risk). But yeah its a damn thorough story. Miami might have to take another season off.

Wasn't Marve already hurt by then? Or was he hurt in that game? Henry played most of it IIRC.

i don't think they'll get the death penalty because (a) they're miami football and (b) it will likely be painted as one out of control booster and maybe a couple of minor athletic department figures (team managers/equipment boys) involved. smu had repeatedly violated ncaa rules and the head coach, athletic director and board of directors were involved in the shenanigans. while the benefits to the players may be worse in the miami situation, there's no evidence that significant figures within the athletic department or administration were involved in the wrongdoing.

it certainly appears that there's a significant lack of institutional control and a great eagerness to look the other way, however.

So Terrell Pryor's agent in effort to get him eligible for the supplemental draft told the NFL that Pryor admitted to receiving additional benefits also from his "mentor" who the NCAA cleared previously. This included cash payments for him to make car payments and such. Because this happened back in March according to his agent that would have made him ineligible for the NCAA and thus should be eligible for the draft.

As for Miami, two of the coaches who were aware of everything are now with Saben at Bama. Sounds pretty fitting, but they will be looking for new jobs very soon.

Between this and Miami the NCAA is going to be put to a major test. They basically have no credibility left and will be forced to try to regain it through punishments.
