I am going to be very disappointed if the Yahoo 10 story is Miami. Maybe back in '87 or in 2001, but not now. North Carolina is just as big of a story now. Ive really been expecting an SEC team.

What was this "Yahoo 10" stuff?

No way though. It's still Miami and this is [expletive] huge. This is the most thorough and detailed investigation to nail a program since SMU.

Basically Yahoo has been pimping a huge story for most of the summer, been thinking it would have been a program more relavant today the way its been hyped up (LSU, Bama, and Auburn were three of the programs thought to be at risk). But yeah its a damn thorough story. Miami might have to take another season off.

Charles Robinson is very thorough in his work....he usually brings the goods when he writes a story about your school. I'd definitely call this story a 10, but until the NCAA advises that the AU investigation is over, I'll still be looking over my shoulder.

Danny Sheridan is supposed to name the name of the money man behind Cam Newton today. As mentioned on a different board this must be Sweeps Week in College Football.

We will see if it actually happens. I'm sure Miami would appreciate it greatly.

Don't bother giving Devin Hester a jet ski. He'll just wreck it.

There's really not much hope for the NCAA if they don't hand out a severe penalty on Miami for all of this.

Danny Sheridan's 'source' is inside the NCAA, so anything he mentions won't be new to the NCAA. Also, why would Sheridan choose the Finebaum show to announce whatever info he has? Finebaum's show is akin to a Jerry Springer production.

edit - here is Sheridan's tweet from earlier in the week. "I've been told the name of the person the NCAA feels allegedly paid Cecil Newton & where witness is. more when on @finebaum this week."

feels allegedly

i don't think they'll get the death penalty because (a) they're miami football and (b) it will likely be painted as one out of control booster and maybe a couple of minor athletic department figures (team managers/equipment boys) involved. smu had repeatedly violated ncaa rules and the head coach, athletic director and board of directors were involved in the shenanigans. while the benefits to the players may be worse in the miami situation, there's no evidence that significant figures within the athletic department or administration were involved in the wrongdoing.

it certainly appears that there's a significant lack of institutional control and a great eagerness to look the other way, however.

It read like more than just a few team managers/equipment guys. Wasn't the head basketball coach implicated?

Gary Parrish talked that through this morning. His reasoning was that since it was (allegedly) done in cash and Haith reportedly never touched the money, that it would ultimately be he said/he said and that Haith won't get any punishment. Tim Floyd and OJ Mayo was the example used. Maybe Alden would fire Haith anyway, but I would doubt it. It would really hurt the program from a timing standpoint, and they would be in line for Haith to sue the crap out of them.

Nevermind that last part. Apparently Haith's contract has a clause that gives the University the right to fire him for essentially having a stigma attached to him, even if he isn’t found guilty of something.

Who is suprised that Sheridan went on Finebaum and then said he wouldn't name names? I'm not listening myself, but I'm reading a recap of the events. Finebaum is acting like he is pissed, evidently, but I wouldn't be surprised if he knew what was going to happen. Sheridan received a butt-ton of hits on his website, and everyone and their mother tuned in for Finebaum's show today. Win-win. Do you know how many times I've been told that proof that an Auburn booster paid Cecil would be released since last October or November or whenever the hell this went down originally?

Charles Robinson at Yahoo did mention on a radio show yesterday that he had a couple of additional stories about major programs coming out later this summer, however. That's the guy I fear.

Devin Hester claims he doesn't know Nevin Shapiro.

Um, what about the picture of the two of you together and the multiple autographed photos you personalized to him?

A good reporter makes mention of that.

An example has to be made out of Miami just to put the fear into the schools that are doing similar things right now. I can just about guarantee that half of the SEC schools are doing something similar to what Miami was caught with. If there ever was a case for the NCAA to use the death penalty again, this would be it.

Yeah, but how can you secure another home run hire like Frank Haith this late in the game?

The program is going to be so fucked. Better get that dump truck full of cash to Brad Stevens' house.

I can't imagine a team will EVER again get the Death Penalty, but Miami (from what it looks like) will comes as close as it comes to that line.

I hope there is someone in Tallahassee with "shoot to kill" orders on Yahoo! Sports team members. I don't ever want FSU implicated.

For Truffle (concerning an earlier topic)

From Monday’s Clarion Ledger Notes:

“MSU players enjoyed a steak dinner with the MSU Animal and Dairy Sciences Department Monday night. The event “Beefing up the Bulldogs,” included a milk-off and hay bale toss.”

haith and the assistant coach sound like the two who could possibly be linked to payments (or at least knowledge/complicity with payments), but this is the college football thread. i don't think the people throwing around "death penalty" are talking about the basketball team.

if you go back and read the outcome of the SMU case, the ncaa basically said they didn't want to give them the death penalty, but felt they had no choice because corruption was so rampant within the program. they'd been put on probation 5 times in the previous decade, they had a two year bowl ban and a one year tv ban, and boosters were still paying players directly with the head coach and athletic director knowing that these things were happening. unless there's more information than what's in this yahoo report, the level of rule-breaking at SMU goes pretty well beyond what was happening at miami.

There's really not much more to indicate a university-wide "look the other way" than this case. As he said, do a background check or hire a PI for one day and you could have had all the information needed to sever ties and report yourself to get off easily.

He's leading the team on the field multiple times, handing the hoops coach and University president a $50K check in a public function, hanging out with coaches and players all over town in a visible setting and trying to fight the compliance guy in the press box as witnessed by many. And through all of this, no one even bothered to check that this young, flashy rich dude was working with an agency that hired UM players?

Apparently Wetzel told Dan Patrick that Shapiro approached Shalala about replacing Larry Coker. In this plan he would just pay for the best assistants to do the coaching while he was just a recruiter.

well yeah, they probably didn't want to know. nobody's arguing that they shouldn't be punished if the information in the yahoo article is accurate. the question is how severely they should be punished.
