After reading through last year's, figured it was time for a current thread. Signing day is a few weeks away, and there will be much more going on than just coaching moves, so let's fire it up!

One question I have is this: USC is limited to signing 15 players per the NCAA's punishment, but they currently have 24 guys committed. I read in last years offseason thread someone saying that backcounting would not be allowed, but that is apparently not the case. Anyone have the actual ruling on this?

If they can backcount, I think they bring in 22 guys this year. That's not as significant a punishment as it first appeared.

Michigan has like 3 defensive recruits who haven't jumped ship and have 8 recruits total right now. Might want to hire a defensive coordinator already. It's going to be a rough signing day this year.

How many are they losing from last year?

You mean seniors? Not that many actually. We were due for a small recruiting class (around 18), but I don't see how we add another 10 guys in a couple weeks time. The unfortunate thing is Hoke will look like he's reviving Michigan because most of our team is back next year and we have a relatively easy schedule. I could see us winning 9-10 games. It's Hoke's second and third years that I'm worried about. This year's recruiting class won't help that worry.

Are you worried that those will be down years, or that Hoke's just not going to do a good job at UM?

Is there enough talent on defense to think you can get to 10?

I'm worried about both. We've had a lot of attrition the past few years, so we have less freshman and redshirt freshman than a normal team. I'm also worried that Hoke isn't going to be that great, and that we're just going back to the 3 yards and a cloud of dust bull crap with less highly-touted players. I'm worried it will be like Michigan of old except with worse players.

I think there will be some interesting sophomores and redshirt freshman that could help out next year that were just very raw last year and didn't get to play. I also think it will help having a defensive group that's all on the same page. Rich Rod and Greg Robinson (defensive coordinator) were def not on the same page and it showed. Kids were always lined up wrong and running around in the wrong spots. Rich Rod wanted a 3-3-5 defense and Robinson obviously had no idea how to run it. It was a complete disaster. I'm hoping Michigan brings in a big time defensive coordinator and things work out a little more smoothly next season.

Alright... it looks like USC has 60 scholarship players returning for 2011. With a scholarship limit of 75, how are they going to fit everyone in? Even if they can backcount and sign more than 15 in this class, they still cannot be over 75 total.

Sponge Worthy (I think...), you have any ideas?

Mandel's explanation:

"Scholarships are based on the academic calendar, not the football calendar. Because USC only signed 18 players last year, 14 of whom enrolled last fall, it can count its nine early enrollees in the current class toward the 2010-11 school year. Should the original ruling stand, the 15-player limit goes into effect in 2011-12 and will include all players that enroll this fall (which may include some recruited walk-ons). It still can't go over the NCAA-imposed 75-scholarship limit for its overall roster."

So, in theory they can sign up to 24 guys this February (backcounting 9), but would have to not renew 9 current scholarships? Crappy thing to do, which is exactly why I can see Kiffin doing it.

(Disclaimer: I realize it's 2011, and not 1951 and that the notion that NCAA football is just a sport played by amateurs at the collegiate level is outdated. And, since it's as big a business as it is, I couldn't fault Lane for cutting the dead weight- particularly among the rising senior class.)

Also, USC is appealing the scholarship reductions and they won't actually take effect until that appeal is ruled upon.

Apparently yet another front-seven recruit (Chase Hounshell) has decommitted from Florida and switched to Notre Dame. I feel like I've entered Bizarro Recruiting World.

Cyrus Kouandjio is coming to town this weekend. I plan on showing him a good time, if you know what I mean.

Your going to have to put out if you expect him to sign.

Hopefully having Coker already on campus and Darian Cooper along for the visit with him will be enough.

....going to be a lot of ups and downs between now and NSD, but I think Auburn will have a top 5 class....and yes, some of those walmart pictures are hilarious. Just to be clear though, this is an agreement between Dr. Pepper and Walmart, not something Auburn requested.
