Jesus christ. 20 team conference in basketball?

19 and whatever you call DePaul.

How would that schedule even work? I mean, two ten-team divisions and no inter-division play?

Probably 18-game schedule and no game against one team. I guess?

But seriously, the aTm fans are in such a little brother rage over LHN that they're making up SECede T-shirts and believing every made up rumor that sounds like they'd go to the SEC. I wonder if they realize that reinforces the stereotype.

The main reason we want to make this move is so that we're no longer the little brother. As long as we stay with Texas that will always be the case. The SECede shirts are over the top but if it helps get the message to our administration that we're fed up with the status quo then it's all good.

I guess you won't be little brother anymore. I'm not sure what you'll be in the SEC, though, when you're getting pounded annually by Bama, Florida, LSU, Auburn, etc. Is that really a better move for aTm?

Well if you look at it that way it wouldn't seem to be a good move, but I think we can be competitive. You may look at our recent history and laugh at that, but when I was in school (mid 90's) we were pretty damn good. I think we held on to RC Slocum too long and we started to slip. Then we made the worst hire ever in Dennis Franchione who drove our program into the ground. Mike Sherman has done a great job in a short amount of time to bring us back to the Top 10 (yes, I know pre-season rankings mean [expletive] and we need to prove it on the field). I realize that the SEC is an extremely tough conference, but we are set to field our best team in probably 15+ years this season and I don't see any reason why we don't continue to get better. The SEC will almost assuredly bring us more money and will give us a recruiting advantage over Texas that we will never have as long as we are in the same conference.

The Texas A&M Board of Regents have called a special meeting for 8/22. The agenda has not been published yet. This could be to approve a move to the SEC. Aggie recruiting expert Billy Liucci was just on Paul Finebaum's show and said he'd be surprised if we DON'T make the move this month. He's generally the most conservative of Aggie recruiting guys. He doesn't stick his neck out too much unless he has really solid info. And if we do make it official before the end of August, we would start playing in the SEC in 2012. The conference would be willing to go with 13 teams and an unbalanced schedule for 1 year until they could add another school (likely from the east) to get to 14.

Previewing Every SEC game this year

A sample:

Auburn at Arkansas. Gene Chizik loses by thirty on the road. His phone rings. Bobby Petrino's squeaky voice on the other end yells out two words: "THE ARISTOCRATS!" He hangs up.

Georgia at Ole Miss. The number of small tipsy women in sundresses wearing huge sunglasses will make this tailgating look like a convention of dead-eyed, alcoholic PowerPuff girls.

Nice, especially the first one.

yeah i was gonna say, they'll go from "little brother" in the big xii to "not really relevant" in the sec. they're still a pretty big player in the big xii; in the sec they're just another team.

Currently ranked just below Alabama and LSU.

Well, that's a preseason poll, the coaches poll even. They, and OSU for that matter, have too many losses on their schedule to finish the year in the top 10.

I'm sure you assume we will lose to Arkansas and Oklahoma. What other losses will we have in your opinion?

The NCAA has ruled against the televising of high school games on conference/school networks.

We know nothing about Alabama's QB(s) and we know A LOT about LSU's (he sucks). I don't think A&M is a title contender, but writing them off as also-rans sounds pretty foolish.

I'm saying that I don't think aTm is good enough to beat every team they absolutely should(including decent squads like Tech and Baylor) and then go 3-2 or better against OU, OSU, UT, Arkansas, and Mizzou. Same thing for OSU(replace Arkansas with Arizona) and Mizzou(replace Arkansas with Arizona St.). The conference is too strong this year, plus teams scheduled the non-con this year with 8 conference games in mind.

The point wasn't even really about this year, it's that aTm is more Arkansas than Alabama. The SEC will chew them up and spit them out far more often than they'll be able to rise to the top of a division that has Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and Arkansas

Kansas finished the top 10 and Alabama finished unranked as little as 4 years ago. I dont disagree that A&M isn't in Alabama's class as a program, but I don't think it's a big leap to say that they're better off in a beefed up SEC than in a disintegrating BIg 12.

I'd be shocked if the Big 12 makes it five more years. Might as well get out while you can get in the SEC instead of waiting and watching your options dwindle.

I'm not saying they shouldn't go to the SEC, I'm saying that there should be some realism about it. Yes, they'll be free of Texas as a conference-mate, and yes, they'll be in a very good position financially. But with that has to come the acknowledgement that you have much less hope of being a consistently big winner in the SEC.

A large contingent of A&M fans are delusional psychos, so I don't think anyone would disagree with that.

Financially how much better will it be?

I agree that many Aggies are delusional, but I haven't found anyone that expects us to move and dominate the conference. Suprisingly, most everyone is pretty realistic about playing in the SEC. We realize we will take our lumps, but that this is the best move for us long term.

The conference is too strong? LOL. What are you basing your "analysis" of A&M on? We had a pretty good team last year and by all accounts should be even better this year. Tech and Baylor will be average at best. OSU is overrated and lost their OC. Texas was 5-7 last year and still has a lot of question marks. Mizzou will be tough, but we get them at home.

It also probably will intensify the recruiting competition in Texas. aTm in the SEC will likely make other SEC teams a more attractive option for Texas high school players.

I basically echo TT's sentiment. Sure, it's better to be in a healthy conference like the SEC than it is to be in the Big 12. But the idea of getting out from under Texas's shadow is a little confusing. They'll likely be a middle of the pack program there, too, with even less hope of sustained high-level success.
