All it would take for the Lakers to completely fall apart is a Bynum injury. I really think he's what's separating them from tumbling into the abyss of Hornets/Thunder/Mavs etc

I haven't seen him play that much this year, has Kobe really fallen off that much?

Heck, I'm not sure the Spurs have that great a chance in the playoffs despite the impressive W-L record. Especially because you have to imagine the Lakers will turn up the effort level come playoff time.

But I think a healthy Celtics or Heat squad should handle the Lakers.

According to today's Hollinger ratings, here are championship odds:

Spurs 22.9%

Heat 21.4%

Magic 11.1%

Bulls 9.9%

Celtics 9.5%

Lakers 8.6%

Mavericks 5.9%

Thunder 2.5%

Hornets 2.0%

Sixers, Grizzlies, Nuggets 1-2%

Blazers, Suns, Knicks, Rockets, Pacers 0.1-1%

After nearly six months of pursuing Carmelo Anthony, countless phone calls, text messages, trade proposals, counteroffers and acrimonious times the Nets are close to landing the four-time All-Star small forward – finally.

The Nets and Nuggets have reached a tentative agreement on a deal involving Anthony, multiple NBA sources told The Record. The deal is pending Anthony agreeing to sign a three-year, $65 million contract extension.

If Anthony says yes, the Nets will get Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Sheldon Williams, Melvin Ely and Renaldo Balkman from the Nuggets. In turn, the Nets will send Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, Troy Murphy, Ben Uzoh and four first-round picks to Denver.

The Nets won’t do the trade unless Anthony agrees to the extension. They’re expected to meet with him during this All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles to try and convince him to join them.

But...everyone told me the Nets deal was dead!!

I think what I said was that the owner said it was dead, which had to count for something. Apparently not much, except a brief respite from constant attention.

I'm really curious to see how the Heat play in the playoffs. They strike me as a team that's more suited for regular season basketball.

See, I'd say the opposite. Their lack of depth could hurt during the regular season, but all of the stars play pretty much the whole game in the playoffs and their best 5 is probably better than everyone else's best 5.

Do you know what leverage means?

Yes, thanks. Quite aware. Appreciate the concern, though.

Then why the confusion?

What confusion? Prokhorov flat out said the discussion was dead, so I thought maybe it might have some merit. That's all.

Fun little factoid on Sportscenter: if you look at Spud Webb's dunks as a ratio of body height to rim height and projected it onto Yao Ming, Yao would be able to dunk on a 15' rim

Probably been covered, but the Nets are getting used bigtime in this Melo crap, as they just want to make the Knicks up their offer, which evidently has been accomplished. That said, I like the Nets offer more myself and if I were Denver, I wouldn't accomodate Melo one bit personally. Although, if he definitely won't sign an extension with the Nets, I'm not sure what else they can do in the end......

To me, it becomes more of a defensive, physical and half court game. Not that the Heat can't do that, but they do better in an open and one on one game. For instance, they have a very low assist total. They aren't going to be able to just win with one on one basketball in the playoffs against better defenses who are playing harder than in the regular season.

Is there a worse period of non-sports than the NBA All-star break? Its already at a bad time (February: football over, baseball still far off, college basketball still not yet interesting) so the only thing thats really 'going on' is hockey. And c'mon. Its hockey.
