If this hard salary cap scenario happens, what happens to the Heat?

Good question. I think they would probably grandfather teams in, or at least give them a grace period to pare down their payroll for those grossly over. That would probably include provisions to sign minimum salaried players to fill a roster.

What was that thing they did after the current CBA in 2005. I remember Dallas was able to release Michael Finley in order to avoid paying luxury taxes. Were they able to waive him and not pay his contract, or did they still have to pay his contract but not the luxury taxes? Maybe they'd do something like that again, and allow teams over the cap to waive one player to get under the cap.

They were talking about that when Lebron signed, I would assume the owners would know the risk in that potentially happening.

As was mentioned earlier, trade salary restrictions would likely be lowered in a hard cap. I'd assume Miami would be able to find plenty of takers for Bosh. They'd then have to find a cheaper big man in return, but wouldn't really lose all that much as a team if they did so.

How could they find plenty of takers for Bosh when he'll be making a crapload of money in a hard cap NBA? I'm assuming if there is a hard cap, the average salary for an elite player will be lower than what Bosh is making now.

I am guessing teams over the cap will just be grandfathered in and be allowed to keep all their current max contract guys until their contracts run out, but have to pay some sort of luxury tax for being over. I doubt the league will switch to a hard cap and, using the Heat as an example, say trade Bosh or release him since you are over. They will just enforce a luxury tax/penalty, now if the Heat want to trade/release him because they don't want to pay that tax/penalty that's something different.

Don't think Denver would like to have him with all the payroll flexibility they're going to have?

The Knicks are so dumb. They aren't going anywhere in the playoffs this year, and Anthony would have signed with them in the off season anyways. Now they gave up a crap ton of players/picks and destroyed their depth.

Assuming there is a hard cap next year if they would have waited until the offseason to sign him, would they still have been able to keep Gallinari, Chandler and Felton and still be at/under the cap?

So was Deron just a prop to help the GM force out Sloan?

Not sure about that. I do think that the Nets got a better player than the Knicks did this week, and gave up less going forward.

Funniest comment I've seen on the deal: "Great news for all those Nets fans who bought Terrence Williams jerseys when he was a rookie."

Haha, good luck New Jersey.

hey ssr, what do you think Boston's window is right now? When they made the trades a few years back, i figured they probably had a 3 year window. well, i was wrong. and when looking at them now, i have no idea how much longer theyre gonna be this good. another year or two? thoughts?

The window expanded for them because Rondo ended up better than most were anticipating. In addition, NBA players are more effective as they age in recent times, for some reason. Allen had been declining and then revived somewhat this year.

However, general consensus is that Garnett, Allen and Pierce are due for a steep decline very soon. At that point, the team is building around Rondo and probably one of Perkins/Davis, and would be sorely in need of shooters and slashers (similar to the Bulls last year, except Deng is actually doing it this year).
