In the second round, the Cubs should take a hard look at Kansas State outfielder Nick Martini. The Co-Big 12 Player of the Year hit .416 this past season as a sophomore with 59 RBI and 19 steals. Martini is a pure hitter with good speed and is strong defensively. Patrolled center field for K-State last spring, but could play all three. While Martini is 5-11, 190 and may get overlooked by some teams, it's players like him that usually make it to the big leagues. He is a late-first round to mid-second round talent, so the Cubs picking him in the second round would be a nice pick.

That's a reach. He's not athletic enough to play CF'er at the ML level and he doesn't hit with enough pop to play the corner OF spots. Plus, he's not 5'11" 190. He's a tweener.

Uk, I'm assuming you have seen him play then?

Matt Purke is pitching for TCU right now in the first game of the College World Series on ESPN.

In the second game, RHP Trevor Bauer will start for UCLA against Florida. And Florida has 1B Preston Tucker in their lineup who BA thinks of highly in next year's draft.

Yeah, but I seen him more at PR HS than K-State though.

UK, have you seen Kyle Hunter? Pitched at Galesburg High School, and now is pitching for K-State.

Yeah, I know a little about Hunter. He was drafted TB, I believe....

Yea the Yankees drafted him in the 42nd I believe this year. Whats your opinion of him? Does he have a legit shot to pitch in the majors in your opinion?

Sounds like Anthony Rendon had a fairly serious injury yesterday.

Link

Team USA first-base coach Ed Blankmeyer, the first person to reach Rendon, said after the game that Rendon's foot was bent at an unnatural angle, and it was apparent immediately that the injury was serious. He was carted off the field and taken by ambulance to a local hospital for X-rays. As of late Wednesday night, the unofficial word was that Rendon sustained multiple fractures in his ankle and foot and will require a pin to be inserted. His ankle is dislocated as well.

The injury is to the same ankle that Rendon injured in the 2009 Baton Rouge Super Regional, sidelining him for the entire summer. But there was no fracture last year—he tore two ligaments in his ankle while chasing a popup in foul territory.

Yeah. I read it was broken and dislocated in other reports. Ugly.

He's definitely falling. I wonder how much time he misses.

Could Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon's injury cause him to slip from the first pick in the 2011 draft?

Tim Avery

Los Gatos, Calif.

Rendon became just the fourth sophomore ever to win Baseball America's College Player of the Year award, joining Robin Ventura, John Olerud and Mark Teixeira. As I've stated before, I would have taken him over Bryce Harper with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft had Rendon been eligible.

Rendon broke and dislocated his right ankle in a baserunning mishap with Team USA on July 14, requiring a three-hour operation. Rice anticipates that he'll be ready to go next spring, and the injury shouldn't have any affect on his long-term ability. Speed isn't a big part of Rendon's game, and unless he's slowed considerably, the ankle shouldn't be a concern.

Teixeira in 2001 and Pedro Alvarez in 2008 missed significant portions of their draft years with injuries, yet both received the biggest deal of any position player in their draft. If Rendon doesn't go No. 1 overall next year, it likely would be because of the depth of the draft class (Texas Christian lefthander Matt Purke, UCLA righthander Gerrit Cole and Texas righty Taylor Jungmann are legitimate top-pick candidates) and not because of his ankle.

I haven't looked at the standings recently...do the Cubs have no shot at the top 3 or 4? There certainly seems to be a gap after Rendon/Purke/Cole and possibly Jungman (of course there's a gap between Rendon and the arms).

Seattle's at #4 right now and the Cubs are 5.5 games in front of them.

I think Seattle is 3. Arizona's 4 and they are 4.5 games behind the Cubs.

Do you see Daniel Norris and Sonny Gray being far behind Rendon/Cole/Purke/Jungmann? With Arizona looking like they will get #7 as a comp pick from this year I think it's pretty important the Cubs finish in the top (bottom) 6.

Or behind them, depending on perspective.

Hate to give a cop out answer but we're still 10 months/one full season away from the draft so a lot will change because of ineffectiveness, injury and the emergence of other prospects. Just think of guys who've fallen from the top like Bobby Brownlie, the 2004 Rice pitchers, Anthony Ranaudo, etc. So where Gray, Jungman and Norris are now doesn't mean too much. It's even tougher for prep guys; I've seen juniors in HS with lofty ratings fall apart their senior year when they suddenly can't even hit 88 mph.

But BA listed Norris 4th though (ahead of Jungman and Gray), so that speaks favorably about him. He could easily improve too. I also think Gray and Jungman are pretty similar but what do I know. I think a guy like Gray has to prove his ability and durability every year because of his size but you know Wilken doesn't mind short pitchers. And, of course, all this is based on me watching each of these guys (besides Cole) fewer than 5 times so take it with an immense grain of salt.
