Yeah, really. Besides the two years in the 90's where we reached the Super Bowl, Favre's had moments just like he did yesterday in basically every one of our playoff defeats. It was amazing that the throw occurred in that stage of the game, but with Brett Favre you have to expect anything to happen (whether it be good or bad). To have the reaction that they did about the Favre throw is just dumbfounding.

The Colts came pretty close to wiping the floor with the Bears. You are correct that it was a close game on the scoreboard until the pick-6. However, while the Colts only won by 12, Vinatieri missed a field goal and an extra point. The Colts out-gained the Bears 430-265, and had 24 first downs to the Bears' 11.

They didn't wipe the floor. Chicago was in it until the end. The yardage isn't that meaningful, since that was essentially what the Bears were designed to do, give up yards but not the big play.

First, I didn't say they did. I said they came pretty close. And the Colts defense was designed the exact same way as the Bears, so I don't think that distinguishing on those grounds is terribly relevant.

Indy may have been designed that way, but they weren't as good at implementing that design. The difference was Indy's offense was much better, but Chicago defense was also better and that was a game throughout.

The Colts didn't wipe the floor with them, but apart from the shaky start, the Colts controlled the game pretty well.

Most people have already concluded that they have no chance.

and they would be REALLY stupid to say that. Maybe I'm just blinded by my bias, but I don't understand why it is a foregone conclusion that they have no chance. I think the teams match up very well. This seems like the most well matched up Super Bowl in a long time. Two killer QB's, two killer offenses, suspect defenses.

I definitely think it will be a good game. The Saints obviously have a good chance of winning. However, the Colts defense is really good, and while Brees has had a great season, I'd still much rather go in there with Manning. I'm a pretty big fan of Brees though, probably my second favorite QB.

But I think both sides of the ball will be great match ups. I'd give the Colts a 55-60% chance of winning.

Oh, CCP (I'm not intending to call you out, I just don't want to dig through this thread to quote you): I disagree with you, and evidently Nate Silver, that kicking the field goal on fourth-and-goal was the incorrect decision.

I'm generally very aggressive in similar situations -- especially with the Colts -- but not against the Jets. Even with the un-Colt-like defensive performance in the second quarter, the Jets had a ceiling on the amount of points they are capable of scoring. The game was never going to be a shoot-out. (I also am unsure how confident I was in scoring, as running may have been hard and passing from the one always is.) In the Super Bowl against the Saints, the Colts sure as heck better go for it in a similar situation -- lots of points are likely to be needed. However, against a team like the Jets, you patiently take your points and eventually you'll have more points then their ceiling allows.

I would want to go for it because the alternative is not bad. The Jets backed up on their 1 yard line are not going to do anything fancy. They aren't going to take any chances that early in the game of giving up the turnover that changes the game (or a holding call on Freeney or Mathis in the end zone). So they'll punt it right back to the Colts and the Colts will probably have it in Jets territory. I think Stover can be pretty accurate from 45 in, so the advantage of having the field goal being so close isn't that much. I do understand the argument of only needing a certain amount of points, but I feel that pinning the Jets on the 1 yard line is going to give the Colts an extra 2-3 points anyway on average from having them out at the 23-25. So I think it's a very minimal risk to go for the touchdown there.

that's awesome. At the start it's unclear whose announcer he is, until right after he screams "Touchdown! NOOOOOOOO"

And yeah, the Bears weren't blown off the field against the Colts, but the Colts controlled that game. There was no point after the first quarter where I thought we had a chance of winning.

Yeah, but at UMfan said they are basically fans. They were a couple of yard from the Super Bowl. To go from that to the interception had similarities to Game 6 of the NLCS for us.

No playoff team has ever lost when outgaining their opponent by 200 yards or more. They more than doubled them up on first downs. They had almost a quarter's worth of time of possession advantage in overtime. They ran over 30 more plays and averaged more than a yard per play than the Saints did. They forced 7 three and outs and the two second half td drives totaled 44 yards.

They dominated the game so badly that they were -3 turnover margin on the road and still were in the driver's seat to win at the end of regulation. But they're the Vikings so they had to lose.

I still can't figure out if this was more painful than the '98 game. The '98 team was better and at home so the loss was more shocking but the Falcons shut us down most of the second half. This was inexplicable. I'm still [expletive] sick.

If it makes you feel any better, the Vikings playoff performances finally convinced me that they were an elite team in the NFL.

It's not inexplicable at all. Your skill players were loose with the football, and it cost you a game you should have won. The blame should be easy to place.

I'm not talking about blame. The Vikings beat themselves and have themselves to blame.

It's that this team took care of the ball all year and suddenly it became contagious. They were at the top of the league in turnovers. They never had a game with more than 2 turnovers all year. None of them were great plays by the Saints. It was total carelessness by a team that wasn't careless in 17 games. And despite it all they still were there to win the game until a 12 man on the field penalty which they didn't have once this year. And they still would have had a 45 yard field goal but the QB with the lowest INT% in the league made an epic blunder.

Posted

I'd have killed myself if the Saints were in the Vikings shoes last night. I definitely feel for Vikings fans. Completely devastating to lose that way.

I thought the Saints played pretty well in most aspects of the game except for ONE thing: 3rd and 1's. They botched 4 freaking 3rd and shorts. The offense moved pretty well throughout most of the game against a solid defense except for those 3rd and shorts. Oh, and Sean Payton got a little cute a couple of times that pissed me off. That stupid double reverse was a terrible play to run deep into your own territory. Brees uncharacteristically missed several open receivers early in the game as well. That's very rare.

Bend but don't break. The Bears led the NFL in turnovers (or was it turnover margin, or both?) in 05 and 06.

yeah, but i dont see how you can ever say that "yardage isn't that meaningful". that's crazy. or that the bears were "designed to give up yards". no. maybe you could say they were designed to force turnovers BECAUSE they gave up a lot of yards.

i dont really get how it's okay to give up a lot of yardage, as long as you stay away from the big play. most times, an 80 yards TD drive that takes 12 plays is no different than an 80 yard touchdown pass

If you force the 12-play drive, though, you have 12 opportunities to force a turnover. If you give up a 1-play, 80-yard TD, there's no chance for a turnover. That's the whole idea behind playing a Cover 2 style defense - give up the underneath yardage, but don't give up the big play. Let them get their yards and shoot for either a turnover or hold them to a field goal.

The Colts didn't destroy the Bears in points, but after the 1Q the game was firmly in the Colts control the rest of the way. Grossman got worse as the game went on and Indy's D was far and away better than the Bears. I think some Bears fans definitely watched a different SB than the rest of the world.

I don't even remember the Colts being picked to win that SB by the end of the two-week lead up to the game. It seemed to me that a majority of 'experts and analysts' had convinced themselves that dome-team Indy couldn't beat the all-weather Bears outside in a torrential rainstorm. Indy also faced a hostile crowd at the damn game. I think that's the only time I've ever seen a SB team get booed taking the field on neutral ground.

I'm sure the media will have the Saints winning this in a blowout by the end of next week. I'm just waiting to see the reasons this time. They can't use the Dome-team excuse. Maybe it'll be the humidity.

I normally wouldn't repost a comment from another site, but this is too funny...from a Favre blurb on PFT:

I KNOW WHAT BRETT FAVRE IS GOING TO DO NEXT YEAR!! he gave me a note after the game.. it says (damm.. i dropped it).. ok.. it says.. (damm i dropped it again).. ok ok.. brett favre says he's going to.. (dammit.. i dropped it again)

You must be a Colts fan or something, because I don't recall ever thinking the Bears would win, nor do I remember hearing anyone pick the Bears.
