Take it for what it's worth ... but several Cardinals fans in my office seem to be convinced that when Pujols' contract discussions do come around, he may be persuaded to take less money in exchange for a partial ownership in the franchise.

Has anything like that been done before?

I don't konw why, but I recall hearing it's not allowed.

I'm quite sure the Cardinals fans in your office pulled this straight from their collective asses.

I'll fully admit to pulling this out of my arse, but they could mean he gets part ownership after he retires, not as part of his current contract. Kind of a buy now pay later unwritten agreement thing.

I doubt it's a possibility, but that's probably what they meant.

The unwritten language part of that would be an even bigger problem with the league.

This was a rumor during the Kobe talks and I believe it's not allowed, at least not in the NBA. I can't imagine it would be allowed in MLB either.

It's documented to not be allowed in salary cap sports, not sure exactly why it would be an issue in the MLB other than conflict of interest in ownership/labor CBA disputes. But one player with a minority ownership stake shouldn't be meaningful. It's just a good way for owners to not let the elite players demand more of the pie, and for the MLBPA to keep all players focused exlusively on the players side of disagreements.

It's official.

7 years 120 mil.

Good, they overpayed. I hope this cripples them for the next decade.

Its funny Stl fans are loving it because "they didnt pay the 22mil Boras wanted". lol

How is it overpaying?

I wouldn't say it's overpaying, it's around market value for a player like Holliday. But unless the Cardinals are going to start committing to being a $110-130 mil. payroll team annually instead of 80-90 this could handicap them in the long run especially after Pujols gets paid this year/next offseason.

It's not overpaying. He's likely to be worth a good deal more than his annual value, at least for the first half of the contract. Even if he falls off and the Cards have to eat a bit to move him in the later years, he should provide around the value of the contract.

I dont care about this contract at all other than the fact that the cardinals are going to end up committing half their payroll to 2 guys, one of which might not actually be that good and might have parlayed a strong 3 months into 120 million dollars.

it might not be overpaying, but it's probably spending outside of their means.

That's the truly interesting part and the reason I'm surprised they got a deal done. I'll be pretty interested to see if there's a lot of deferred money.

That or if they will start to have a committed payroll well north of $100 mil. in the coming years

Who was the Cardinals bidding against? At least the Cubs are not the team in the NL Central that can make a stupid finanical decision.

I would argue that they are overpaying because I think they are getting a player that can only put up $17 mil a year numbers in Colorado and will put up numbers more like he did in Oakland the next 7 years in St. Louis

His splits while in colorado show that Coors WAS THE REASON for most of those numbers

it's not.

Not versus market value, no. But they were bidding against themselves, so paying market value really wasn't necessary. It helps the Cards, but this is a victory for Scott Boras.

I don't understand this line of reasoning. Do you think he suddenly would have signed for 5/75 or something?

We're probably loving it because the Cardinals locked up a 5-6 win player for his prime years.
