I will take Podsednik any day. He knows how to get on base. He knows how to move runners. He knows how to be a pest and steal bases. Our team stole 56 bases as a team last year. He hit .320 against lefties last year as well. Put him in the leadoff role and watch him do his thing. We've tried to be a home run team the past few years and it hasn't worked. Give me some speed in this lineup.

I'm going to guess this is a joke account, but it's worth noting that the worst Cubs team of the last 6 years 'had speed' in the leadoff role.

Ok, I simply can't tell if this is a joke. I'll assume it is.

If I thought that there was some chance that Podsednik could be a competant defensive player. I I thought that last year wasnt a fluke and Podsednik wouldnt spend more 80% of the season on the DL. If I thought that wed get 2005 Scott Podsednik, maybe. But this is a broken down player. He cant even almost play center field anymore. He could barely manage left field last year. All of the sudden, Marlon Byrd is starting to look like an amazing option.

As far as Im concerned, If Hendry signs Podsednik, he should be fire before the ink dries. Sam Fuld is a much better fielder than Podsednik, les of an injury risk, and can probably put up comparable, if not better offensive stats.I can undertand not giving your own guys a chance when you have a better option, or more importantly the money for that option, but we dont, so theres no reason for this money to burn a hole in Hendrys pocket. Spending 6 mil on the same guy you have for league minimum is inexcuseable. If nothing else, work with Fuld and Colvin, and if it doesnt work, make a summer trade.

At this point, I cant fathom how there could possibly be any Hendry supporters left out there. Maybe its time for Ricketts to stop celebrating his purchase and pay attention to the team and the guy whose destroying it. Hint: It aint and never was Milton Bradley.

I agree about Posednick, but let's not kid ourselves about Fuld/Colvin. Working with Fuld/Colvin will put us so far behind at the deadline, there won't be a need for a trade.

yeah, that offense in 2008 was brutal.

I call shenanigans on this post.

You'd think we'd learn from the last offseason. There's a small chance that someone will be available in January for a below market deal. Look at all the one year deals passed out last year.

I agree, but the Cubs want to add a CF. After Byrd the free agent market is pretty thin. The guys you might be able to get on a one year deal in January are the Scott Podsednik, Rick Ankiel, and other guys currently asking for too much money. For the postion we need it might not be alot of good low buys later in the offseason. Of course I would go no higher then a 2y at 12m with team or vesting option for the third year. If he wants more or can get more, I would probably wait it out.

I'd Prefer to go a cheap one year deal with Crisp or go the Reed Johnson/Ryan Church route . Spend the rest of the dollars on trying to improve are poor fielding light hitting middle infield. Uggla, Lopez,Ocab, Tejeda, Derosa,Hudson are still on the market.

Agreed with the middle infield. I'd love to get Hudson or Uggla and trade Fontenot. I'll pass on Crisp, I think injuries have taken their toll on him. I'd just go with Fuld/Colvin instead of signing a guy like Crisp or Pods.

Reed Johnson/Ryan Church would work, but i heard Church is kind of a jerk, so that might interfere with getting our big offseason acquisition of Silva off track. Sorry. It's just frustrating knowing that after the most disappointing season since 2004 (lol), the way this team is going to be built for a championship run is revolving around Posednik/Byrd and Carlos Silva. How do we not call for mutiny?

Which is better that or revolving around Jeromy Burnitz, Todd Hollandsworth and Glendon Rusch?

Fuld/Colvin should be nothing but an absolute last resort. That's a horrible option. If a Church/Reed platoon could be had cheaper than Byrd I definitely could tolerate that, but how realistic is it that the two of them together would be cheaper then Byrd?

I really think people need to stop wanting DeRosa back. Old, bad year, wrist injury...bad combo. He's not a good option offensively or defensively at this point.

Along those lines I definitely agree with not wanting Crisp. Too much of a risk.

I don't think Crisp is gonna be all that good anymore. He was never the same after he left the Indians.

Would $4 million for two years be too little for him? He made $3,060,000 last year, but also had a career year. Cameron is getting $15.5 million for two years, so hopefully Hendry doesn't overpay for Byrd.

Please don't overreact, Jimbo.

The Cubs are "not leaning toward" any specific candidate to be their new center fielder at this time, reports Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.

The trade of Milton Bradley will allow the Cubs to move Kosuke Fukudome to right field, where he's less likely to be a liability, but it leaves a void in center. Marlon Byrd and Scott Podsednik are the team's strongest options among free agents, but GM Jim Hendry could also explore trades, possibly with the Yankees for Melky Cabrera or Brett Gardner, depending on how their roster shakes out. Reed Johnson could also make sense, after the Cubs non-tendered him last weekend.

Gardner is an interesting name. I believe he's very highly regarded defensively and on the basepaths. He did a decent job of getting on base last year. It's possible he's Juan Pierre with better defense and baserunning. Which isn't bad at the money he's making.

Yeah, I posted this in another thread. I wouldn't hate Gardner. BA compared him to Juan Pierre with better plate discipline. However, Gardner also is a better defender and steals at a better rate.

So basically, we trade a good but overpaid player for a horrible, overpaid player so we can free up a few mil to sign a mediocre player. Brilliance.

Either you're being intentionally melodramatic and misleading, or you're the only baseball fan on Earth that doesn't know why Bradley was traded.
