Guesses on how much this Byrd in the hand will be worth? I'm setting the over/under at $7 mil per year and taking the over.

You're probably right. Cameron is gone, so Byrd is now option A. I wonder how many other teams are looking at option A.

I honestly believe the Cubs will end up with Podsednik and Hendry will spin it like the biggest coop of the offseason.

What I don't understand is, if we are willing to go with the status quo or a little less now that we made the trade today, why not go with Colvin in the OF. The likelihood of competing once Holliday signs is virtually zero, so why lock ourselves up with anyone at all now?

I'd rather go with Fuld than Colvin for now.

So basically, we trade a good but overpaid player for a horrible, overpaid player so we can free up a few mil to sign a mediocre player. Brilliance.

Nutshell, meet Jim Hendry's offseason.

I gave Jim Hendry the benefit of the doubt last year with the ownership change and desperate economic conditions. This offseason is inexcusable. Rich Harden and Milton Bradley turned into Carlos Silva and maybe Marlon Byrd. Read that last sentence again.

Kinda like how Jim Edmonds and Mark DeRosa turned into Milton Bradley and Aaron Miles last off season right?

I cant beleive what has happened today and now reading this...

ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick reports that free agent outfielder Scott Podsednik has emerged as a target for the Cubs, among another teams.

Holy hell we are screwed...Screw you Hendry

Crasnick blows, plus we've known for a week that the Cubs were at least kicking the tires on Podsednik, if quietly and from a distance. It's not as if that was just dropped on us today.

Got rid of DeRosa and Marquis to be able to sign Bradley. Signed Miles to replace DeRosa. Got rid of Bradley for Silva, so we can afford Byrd. I can only assume next year we'll shed Byrd for God knows what kind of awful. If only Hendry could have left well enough alone after '08, but no, those 3 games in October showed all of the flaws of a 97 win team, and revamping was a must.

What?

This division still stinks if Holliday signs with the Cardinals. It's not like they become world beaters signing back a guy who hit out of his mind in a relatively small span of time and will not repeat such a performance over the course of a season. Holliday is good, but come on.

Jim's not done either. I am sure there is one more devastating move he has in store for us. The clown should have been fired three years ago.

at this point i just want whoever takes a one year deal. i'm less concerned about the 2010 cubs and more concerned about hendry giving out even more bad contracts before he's gone.

In 2005, the Sox rode the coat tails of the great Scott Podsednik to a World Series title.

In 2006, the Cubs rode the coat tails of the pathetic Juan Pierre to the worst record in the National League.

Now Pierre is on the Sox, and Pods is rumored to be a target of the Cubs. Will the roles reverse?

About as likely as Carlos Silva winning the Cy Young.

Given the options, it's disappointing Hendry won't consider Johnny Damon. He isn't returning to the Yankees with the signing of Nick Johnson. He's lefty, speedy and could fill Hendry's desire for a leadoff guy. No, his defense isn't great, but I'd prefer him over Byrd, Podsednik and Ankiel.

My guess is that hes out of our budget, or surely, we would have heard his name come up in the discussions.

On the other hand, I supose if Soriano and Soto can rebound from their dreadfull 2009, we could do worse than Marlon Byrd as a #7 hitter.

He wants 3y at 33m, and even the Yankees don't wanna pay him that. Plus from the sound of things I don't think the Cubs are actually looking for a leadoff hitter.

Yeah, I think the Yanks were at something like 2-14 and they(Boras) came back at 2-20 or so, bu they already had a deal with Johnson. I think I'd rather have Damon at 2-20, than Byrd at 2-12 even.......And if our payroll is going to be around 140-145ish, we can afford to make that type of deal.

Damon would be a horrible CF at this point in his career. We spent plenty of time hating on Pierre's noodle arm in 2006, I think Damon's arm is worse. As for RF, he hasn't played more than 5 games in a season in RF since 1999. I don't think he's a viable fit for us, but if he was I'd be interested. He's old but he still puts up good numbers, better numbers than any of the other options out there.
